Friday FAQ: Does Adding One More Service Mean I Need a Different Contractor License? 🏗️📋

❓ "I'm expanding my construction business. Do I need a new license?"
✔️ Possibly! And it's worth checking BEFORE you start offering that new service.

In Minnesota, residential contractor licensing depends partly on the types of work your business performs.

Under Minnesota's specialty skill rules, contractors performing work in more than one designated skill area may need a residential contractor or remodeler license.

❓ "What counts as a different specialty?"
✔️ More than you might think.

Minnesota recognizes eight specialty skill areas, including:

• Carpentry
• Masonry and concrete
• Interior finishing
• Exterior finishing
• Roofing
• Drywall and plaster

For example, a contractor who specializes in carpentry may have different licensing requirements if they expand into concrete work.

❓ "What happens if I don't check?"
✔️ You could be putting your business at risk.

Working without a required license can lead to penalties, compliance problems, and potential issues with your payment rights.

And remember, licensing and registration are not always the same thing!

A few good habits can help:

• Follow up consistently
• Keep clear records of what is owed
• Track payment deadlines
• For construction projects, keep an eye on mechanic’s lien deadlines too

Because chasing payment is frustrating enough without realizing a deadline slipped by.

Here’s your midday reminder: Fall is a good time to wrap up more than just the jobsite. 🍂🛠️

As Minnesota’s construction season starts to slow down, take time to close out the business side of your projects too.

Make sure change orders are documented, final invoices are sent, project files are complete, and any payment issues are being addressed. If there are outstanding questions about lien rights, contracts, or closeout obligations, now is the time to deal with them.

A clean project closeout can help prevent unfinished business from following you into winter.
