One of my favorite parts of this trip has been watching my daughter spend time with my family.

As a mom, there is something incredibly special about watching your child create memories with family.

I have seen her interact with my mom, play with her cousins, learn Somali songs and practice “buranbur” with her cousins.

She’s creating stories that aren’t just about where we live now.

She’s learning where we come from.

And I hope one day she’ll look back at these moments with the same gratitude I feel today.

That’s one of the greatest gifts this trip has given me.

What is something you want your children to remember about their family?

It’s not the tourist attractions I’m going to miss the most…

It’s the ordinary things.

Sitting with family.

Having tea together.

Someone dropping by unexpectedly.

Hearing people laughing in the next room.

Being close enough to family that visiting doesn’t require a plane ticket.

These are the things you don’t realize are precious until you live thousands of miles away.

I know I’ll miss them when I leave.

So right now, I’m trying to appreciate them while I can.”

I’m leaving Kenya soon and honestly, I’m not ready..

When you’re living in the diaspora, you learn that the hardest goodbyes aren’t always dramatic.

Sometimes it’s knowing you’re leaving behind the people you love… and going back to a life where being together requires a plane ticket, time off work, planning and sacrifice.

These past few months have been a gift.

I’ve laughed.
I’ve celebrated.
I’ve made memories.
I’ve slowed down.
I’ve spent time with people I don’t get to see often enough.

And now I’m trying to be fully present for these final days.

Because one thing this trip has reminded me of is this:

Don’t keep postponing the moments that matter most.

This is more than a milestone! For me, this represents persistence.

It represents all the days I showed up when I didn’t feel like it.

The days I questioned myself.

The days I wondered if this would ever work for me.

The days I had every reason to slow down—but chose to keep going.
