In July of 2025, I asked Maya to meet me at a bar and told her something that made her literally sick.

15 months later, I asked every person on our team to follow me as I jumped off a cliff and I quit “our jobs” collectively. Our jobs at the company I poured blood, sweat and so so many tears into as a BCBA trying to prove herself in the tech industry. More soon…

Ok but like… why do I want to join this cult fr?

One of the trickiest things with talking about high-control groups is how much gray space there is.

A lot of the “ingredients” of a cult are also the ingredients of thriving workplace cultures and meaningful social groups. That’s part of why this shaping example killed me!

One thing is for sure though… my cult would have a “comfy clothes encouraged” dress code. 🙃

A sneak peak inside one of the courses in our upcoming “Sketchy Behavior” OBM CEU Series.

The OBM BS Detector aims to help BCBAs who are unhappy in clinical work identify some of the strategies we’ve seen that aim to separate you from your time and money, without the outcomes that are promised.

Here are a few of the red flags we’ve seen:

😵‍💫Unverifiable instructor expertise: Who’s teaching/coaching/consulting matters. Check their credentials. Anyone can use AI to generate a Powerpoint.
😰 Critical information is paywalled (or you have to schedule a call to get it). That’s the set up for hard sales tactics.
🤩 Vague promises: Lack of outcomes hide behind pretty marketing copy.
💰 Cost doesn’t justify what you get.
👯‍♀️ You get paid to bring more people. We aren’t talking about referral programs, we are talking about recruitment schemes.
🕵🏻‍♀️ Lack of evidence to support claims: That’s pretty clear.

I have a very loud inner voice. Its name is Chad.

Chad has made it harder for me to be brave, to take risks, or make bold decisions.

Chad hasn’t s**u as I’ve gained more experience, but I’ve found ways to work around (and with) him.

So… just a reminder that you can be amazing, smart, interesting and credible no matter what Chad says.

💬 Constant “Hey Hun!” messages from that girl you went to high school with, or even
🤖 Your AI agent telling you just how smart you are

It’s less what it looks like, and more about the intensity and frequency.

Surprisingly… this is not as niche of an experience as you may think.

But anyway, “Behavior Analysis of Predatory Systems” is coming up on 10/13 as part of our “Sketchy Behavior” CEU series.

I’ll be bold and confidently say there will be no funner way to get your Ethics CEUs in for your next renewal.

What do conspiracy theories, pyramid schemes, misinformation, cults, and scams all have in common? They leverage behavioral science to get people to buy in.

Maybe you’ve heard of Consumer Behavior Analysis (CBA). If not, it’s one of the subspecialties of Organizational Behavior Management and it focuses on how people make decisions about how to spend their time and money. That’s the common thread for this bundle!

What’s an industry you’re passionate about?

When you have a clear picture on those questions you can move to step 2 (coming later this week).

Don’t know how to answer those questions? Start with Heward et al (2022) about 350 domains of behavior analysis to get you’re creative juices flowing!
