Two years ago today, Hurricane Helene changed our community forever.
On September 27, 2024, our region was devastated by a storm unlike anything many of us had ever experienced. Homes were destroyed, roads and bridges were washed away, lives were lost, and the place we call home was forever changed.
But in the middle of unimaginable destruction, we also witnessed something powerful… the strength of our community.
Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers became friends. First responders, volunteers, linemen, healthcare workers, businesses, churches, organizations, and countless everyday citizens stepped up and worked side by side to help those who needed it most.
As your local fire department, we were honored to be there, not only during those first difficult days, but throughout the long road to recovery. We saw firsthand the devastation, but we also saw the courage, compassion, and determination that followed.
Two years later, we remember those we lost.
We remember the families whose lives were forever changed.
We remember the countless people who answered the call to help.
And we remember a community that refused to give up.
While much has been rebuilt, we know recovery doesn't happen overnight. There are still reminders of that storm all around us, and there are still people carrying the impact of it every day.
Today, we aren't just looking back at the destruction. We're looking at how far we've come.
To everyone who helped a neighbor, cleared a road, brought supplies, opened their home, volunteered their time, answered a call, donated, prayed, or simply checked on someone who needed it, thank you.
You showed what Saluda and our surrounding communities are made of.
Two years later, we remember.
We honor.
We rebuild.
And we continue moving forward together.
