Same entry. Different door. Different everything.

The home was Mediterranean. The old door wasn't. Painted gray, horizontal glass panels, brass hardware. Generic modern in a setting built around arches, ornament, and stone.

Matt walked through the architecture with the homeowners: the arched stone surround, the shell crest above the door, the lanterns, the stone planters. The new door needed to speak the same language. They settled on a custom entry with Moorish lattice on top, scrollwork on the bottom, set in a dark frame with dark bronze hardware. The arched opening stayed. The door finally belongs to the house.

Matt personally measured and oversaw the installation. No subcontractors, no handoffs, no one on-site who doesn't know the project.

After 23 years of doing this, the question I hear more than almost any other is some version of: "I don't even know where to start."

That's not a problem. That's exactly where most people are when they reach out.

The homeowners who have the hardest time aren't the ones who don't know anything. They're the ones who spent weeks researching and ended up more confused than before. There's a lot of conflicting information out there about materials, installation, what things cost, and what to ask.

The consultation isn't a sales visit. It's a site visit. I come out, take measurements, and we talk through what makes sense for your specific home and entry. By the end of it, you know what you need and roughly what it costs. Then you decide.

No pressure. No follow-up calls if you're not ready.

If you've been putting off reaching out because you're not sure where to start, that's the best reason to make the call.

Door replacements usually go fine. When they don't, it's almost always one of these three mistakes.

None of them are dramatic. None of them are always the homeowner's fault. But all of them turn what should be a straightforward project into something more complicated than it needed to be.

Swipe through before you hire anyone.

Save this. It comes up in almost every consultation.

Before and after. Same house, completely different entry.

The old oak double doors weren't wrong, exactly. They just didn't fit the home anymore. The lighter wood tone fought the rest of the architecture instead of grounding it. And without glass, no light made it into the entry.

Matt came out, took measurements, and walked through what would actually work on this exterior. The homeowners settled on a single stained craftsman door flanked by two narrow sidelights. The dark stain anchors the entry. The sidelights and glass top pull natural light through the doorway.

Same opening. Completely different feeling walking up to it.

Most homeowners get surprised by what a door replacement costs — because no one walked them through what's actually in the number.

It's never just the door. The opening, the install, and who does the work all move the price. Swipe through to see where it comes from.

Coastal fog, afternoon sun, and everything in between — your East Bay front door takes more weather than most people realize.

The right material depends on your home: how the entry sits, how it's exposed, and what you want from the door long-term.

Swipe through fiberglass, iron, and wood — and where each one fits.

The entry is the part of your home that greets everyone.

Before the conversation starts. Before the house is even opened. It speaks first — and it speaks the longest.

A door that fits the scale of your home, the character of the neighborhood, the way you want your property to read from the street.

That's not decoration. That's a considered decision.

That's what we help homeowners make.

Save this if you've been thinking about yours.

What determines the right door material for an East Bay home isn't style preference — it's the conditions your entry actually faces.

The East Bay sits between coastal marine influence and inland heat. Depending on where your home is and which direction your entry faces, you could be dealing with salt air, direct afternoon sun, morning fog, or all three across different seasons. That range matters more than most homeowners expect when they're choosing a door.

A few things worth knowing before you decide:

Sun orientation matters more than zip code. A west-facing door in Walnut Creek takes afternoon sun differently than a north-facing door in the same neighborhood. The material that performs well in one situation may not be the right call in the other.

Moisture and temperature swings affect different materials differently. Some hold their shape and finish better under coastal humidity. Others handle direct heat better but need more attention in wetter conditions. There's no universal right answer — it depends on your specific exposure.

Hardware and finish selection is part of the same conversation. Coastal proximity affects hardware longevity as much as the door itself. This is worth discussing before you commit to anything.

The right answer for your entry depends on the home, the exposure, and what you're trying to accomplish long-term. That's exactly what the consultation is for.

DM us if you're working through this decision — we're happy to talk it through.

An East Bay home, before and after. Same entry — a different door, a completely different first impression.

The homeowners had been looking at the front door for years. Nothing was broken — but it wasn't right for the home anymore. The scale was off, the hardware was dated, and the entry didn't fit the way the rest of the house had evolved. Matt came out, took measurements, and walked through what would actually work on this exterior. They settled on a custom brown double entry with circular glass panels that fits the architecture the way the original never did.

Before and after are in the photos. What made it possible: one company handling everything from selection through installation. Matt measured personally, oversaw the install, and did the final walkthrough. No subcontractors — ever. Same standard since 2003.
