Governor Gavin Newsom recently issued a State of Emergency Proclamation ahead of an anticipated significant 2026-2027 El Niño season. El Niño is a climate pattern that can affect our fall and winter weather. It may bring periods of heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are monitoring conditions for the upcoming event.

The Town of Danville, City of San Ramon, and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District are continuing planning and preparation efforts including clearing downed trees and debris from creeks and channels, inspecting and cleaning storm drains, and preparing and supplying sandbag distribution sites throughout the community.

Our REMS team has returned home after being deployed to the Dome Fire in Yosemite.

Rapid Extraction Module Support, teams are specially trained to provide emergency rescue and extraction for firefighters working in remote and difficult terrain. These teams are positioned to quickly reach, stabilize, and remove an injured firefighter when traditional access or evacuation methods may not be possible.

REMS personnel are equipped for technical rescue operations, including rope rescue, patient packaging, and moving patients through steep or rugged terrain to a location where they can receive further medical care.

We’re proud of our members who deployed to support firefighters working on the Dome Fire and grateful to have them safely back home.

Today, we gathered at Oak Hill Park to remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to recognize the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who answered the call 25 years ago.

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District would like to thank the San Ramon Valley Exchange Club for hosting this meaningful 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony and for continuing to keep the memory of that day alive.

Fire Chief Jonas Aguiar joined other community leaders and dignitaries in reflecting on the events of September 11 and the lasting impact they had on our nation, our first responders, and our communities.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended and stood together with us in remembrance. Your presence helps ensure that we never forget the lives lost, the heroes who responded, and the enduring spirit of service and unity that followed.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

On Sunday, September 6, our firefighters responded to a report of a mercury spill from a grandfather-style clock. Our Hazardous Materials Unit was dispatched, and our hazardous materials specialists worked with local resources and environmental agencies to safely contain, clean up, and dispose of the hazardous material.

Mercury can be found in some older household items, including certain thermometers, thermostats, switches, barometers, and antique clocks. When released, mercury can break into small silver colored droplets that are difficult to see and can spread easily.

If mercury spills:
• Keep people and pets away from the area.
• Do not touch, sweep, or vacuum the mercury.
• Move to a safe location and call 911.

Our Hazmat specialists are trained and equipped to safely assess and manage hazardous material incidents. When it comes to mercury or other unknown hazardous materials, leave the cleanup to the professionals.
