While communities across the Gulf Coast are dealing with flooding rains and severe weather from the remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur, our stretch of paradise largely avoided the worst of it. The forecast had plenty of us watching radar, checking spaghetti models, and making sure the patio furniture was secure, but Mother Nature showed a little mercy this time.

Santa Rosa Beach is known for its beautiful white-sand beaches and clear Gulf waters, making it a popular destination for swimming, paddleboarding, and fishing. While shark encounters are rare, sharks are a natural part of the Gulf ecosystem, and beachgoers should always practice basic safety precautions. Local officials frequently remind visitors that sharks are commonly present in the area, even when they are not visible from shore.

To reduce the risk of a shark encounter, swim near lifeguards when available and pay attention to beach warning flags. Purple flags indicate the presence of dangerous marine life, including sharks. After several shark incidents in Walton County in 2024, local authorities increased patrols and encouraged swimmers to remain alert and aware of their surroundings.

Experts recommend avoiding swimming at dawn, dusk, or at night, when many shark species are more active. Swimmers should also stay away from schools of baitfish, diving birds, and areas where fish are actively feeding, as these conditions can attract larger predators.

Additional safety tips include:

Swim in groups rather than alone.
Stay close to shore.
Avoid wearing shiny jewelry that may resemble fish scales.
Leave the water immediately if you see large schools of fish behaving erratically.
Follow all instructions from lifeguards and local authorities.

Although recent shark incidents in Walton County received national attention, shark attacks remain extremely uncommon. The best approach is to stay informed, follow beach safety guidelines, and enjoy the water responsibly.

Hurricane season is right around the corner. At Second Home Services, we help absentee homeowners prepare for hurricane season with home checks, storm prep coordination, securing outdoor items, post-storm inspections, and peace of mind while you’re away.

NOAA has released its 2026 Atlantic hurricane forecast, predicting a below-normal season. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with a 55% chance of below-normal activity, 35% chance of near-normal, and 10% chance of above-normal.

There is still uncertainty in how each season will unfold, that is why it’s essential to review your hurricane preparedness plan now. It only takes one storm to make for a very bad season.
