Today's CNA Skill Spotlight: Partial Bed Bath & Gown Change

A partial bed bath is a basic CNA skill used to clean specific areas of a resident’s body without giving a full bath. It is commonly performed when a resident is unable to bathe independently or needs assistance with personal hygiene.

🧼 Key Areas to Focus On
A CNA may assist with cleaning:
Face and neck
Underarms
Hands and arms
Chest and abdomen
Back
Perineal area, following proper privacy and infection-control procedures

👕 Changing the Resident’s Gown
When changing a gown, the CNA should:
✅ Explain the procedure to the resident.
✅ Provide privacy and maintain dignity.
✅ Use proper hand hygiene and gloves when appropriate.
✅ Remove the soiled gown carefully.
✅ Observe for redness, irritation, bruising, or skin breakdown.
✅ Put on the clean gown without unnecessarily exposing the resident.
✅ Make sure the resident is comfortable and safely positioned.

A bed bath isn't just about cleanliness. It is also an opportunity for the CNA to observe the resident’s skin and report any unusual findings to the nurse.
