A hole in wood is a hole in wood… right?

Not exactly.

One of the biggest mistakes in pest control is assuming that similar-looking damage must have the same cause.

In reality, the **size, shape, location and surrounding evidence** can tell a very different story.

So for today's **Florida Pest Detective**, we're giving you four clues.

Can you match each one to the correct pest **before reading the answers?**

# # # 🔎 CLUE #1 — THE PERFECT ROUND HOLE

You notice a relatively large, nearly perfect circular opening in exposed wood—often around fascia, trim, decks, railings or other unfinished or weathered wood.

There may even be some coarse sawdust-like material nearby.

**Who might be responsible?**

A. Termites
B. Carpenter Bees
C. Rats
D. Ants

# # # 🔎 CLUE #2 — TINY PIN-SIZED HOLES

Several very small, round openings appear in a piece of wood.

Depending on the insect involved, you may also notice fine powder or frass associated with the damaged area.

**What deserves consideration?**

A. Wood-Boring Beetles
B. Mosquitoes
C. Cockroaches
D. Roof Rats

# # # 🔎 CLUE #3 — THE ROUGH, IRREGULAR OPENING

You discover an opening around a soffit, vent, garage, roofline or another vulnerable area of the structure.

Unlike the neat holes above, the edges show obvious **gnawing or enlargement**.

**Who should be on the suspect list?**

A. Drywood Termites
B. Rodents
C. Carpenter Bees
D. Mosquitoes

# # # 🔎 CLUE #4 — THE TINY OPENING WITH PELLETS BELOW IT

You repeatedly clean up what looks like tiny grains or pellets beneath a piece of wood…

…and a few days later, they're back.

Look closer and you may find a very small **kick-out opening** in the wood above.

**What could that indicate?**

# # # ** #1 — CARPENTER BEES 🐝**

Carpenter bees can create remarkably round entrance holes as they excavate galleries in wood.

That doesn't mean every round hole is automatically a carpenter bee hole—but the **diameter, location and condition of the surrounding wood** can provide valuable clues.

# # # ** #2 — WOOD-BORING BEETLES**

Several kinds of wood-boring beetles can leave small exit holes in wood.

The size and shape of the hole, the type of wood involved and the appearance of any powder or frass can help a trained inspector narrow down the possibilities.

# # # ** #3 — RODENTS 🐀**

Rats and mice are accomplished gnawers.

They may enlarge existing gaps around buildings to gain access to protected areas such as attics, garages and wall voids.

That's why an opening should never simply be sealed without first considering **why it's there and whether something may already be using it.**

# # # ** #4 — DRYWOOD TERMITES 🪵**

Drywood termite colonies live inside the wood they infest.

Workers can push their distinctive f***l pellets—known as **frass**—through tiny kick-out openings.

Homeowners often notice the pellets long before they ever see an actual termite.

And that's an important clue.

When we talk about hurricane preparedness in Florida, it's easy to focus on the house.

Shutters.

Roof.

Generator.

Trees.

Emergency supplies.

All of those things matter.

But ultimately, the most important part of any preparedness plan isn't the property.

IT'S THE PEOPLE—and pets—INSIDE IT.

Know your evacuation options.

Identify a destination ahead of time and think about more than one route for getting there.

📱 HOW WILL EVERYONE COMMUNICATE?

During an emergency, family members may not all be together.

Decide:

📱 Does everyone have important phone numbers?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Does every family member understand the plan?

Sometimes the simplest details become the hardest ones to figure out when everyone is stressed.

🐶 AND DON'T FORGET THE FAMILY MEMBERS WITH FOUR LEGS.

Pets need a plan too.

Before an emergency:

🐾 Know where you can take them if you evacuate
🐾 Keep identification information current
🐾 Have carriers or leashes accessible
🐾 Keep food, water and necessary medications ready
🐾 Maintain copies of vaccination and veterinary information
🐾 Keep a recent photo of you with your pet

Don't assume you'll figure it out when the time comes.

Plan for them now.

Identification.

Medical information.

After a major storm, having the information you need readily available can make recovery much easier.

Florida preparedness doesn't always require a major project.

Sometimes it starts with **15 minutes and a walk around your property.**

During September’s **Month of Preparedness**, we're focusing on getting homes ready **before the problem starts**—and today's challenge combines storm preparation with pest prevention.

Because when severe weather changes the conditions around your property, pests may be quick to take advantage of what the storm leaves behind.

# # # ⏱️ SET A TIMER FOR 15 MINUTES.

Then see how many of these five areas you can check.

# # # 1️⃣ LOOK UP — ROOFLINE, SOFFITS & GUTTERS

Walk around the home and look upward.

Do you see:

🔎 Loose or damaged soffit material?
🔎 Openings around rooflines?
🔎 Gutters filled with leaves or debris?
🔎 Tree limbs touching or hanging over the structure?
🔎 Vents or screening that appear loose or damaged?

High winds and heavy rain can turn an existing weakness into a much larger opening.

And after the storm, that opening may become an entrance for **rodents, insects or wildlife.**

# # # 2️⃣ LOOK DOWN — WATER & DRAINAGE

Now look at ground level.

💧 Are gutters draining away from the structure?
💧 Is irrigation repeatedly soaking the foundation?
💧 Are there containers that will collect rainwater?
💧 Are drains and drainage areas clear?
💧 Is anything creating persistent moisture next to the building?

Remember:

A storm doesn't only bring wind.

It can also create **hundreds of new little places for water to collect.**

And in Florida, standing water can quickly become part of a mosquito problem.

# # # 3️⃣ CHECK THE DOORS & GARAGE

Take a quick look at exterior doors and the garage.

🚪 Are the door sweeps intact?
🚪 Can you see daylight beneath a door?
🚪 Does the garage door seal completely?
🚪 Is weatherstripping damaged or missing?

A small gap may not look significant to us.

To a rodent or insect looking for shelter, it can look very different.

# # # 4️⃣ SECURE THE THINGS PESTS WANT

Check around the garage, lanai and exterior storage areas.

🐀 Pet food
🐀 Bird seed
🐀 Garbage
🐀 Recycling
🐀 Outdoor refrigerators or cooking areas
🐀 Stored cardboard
🐀 Bags of grass seed or other organic materials

Keep food sources properly contained and trash secured—especially before severe weather disrupts normal garbage collection.

# # # 5️⃣ TAKE A “BEFORE” PHOTO

This may be the easiest preparedness step of all.

📸 Stand at each side of your home and take a few photographs.

Capture:

• Rooflines
• Soffits
• Screens
• Exterior doors
• Landscaping
• Utility penetrations
• The foundation perimeter

Why?

Because after severe weather, you'll have something to compare against.

Instead of wondering:

**“Was that opening always there?”**

you can look.

That's preparedness.

A major storm can change the pest conditions around a property remarkably quickly.

Heavy rainfall and flooding can disrupt the places where rats, mice and other wildlife normally find food, water and shelter.

At the same time, the storm may change your home.

A structure that was well sealed before the weather arrived may suddenly have:

🌳 Storm-damaged soffits or rooflines
🚪 Doors that no longer close properly
🪟 Torn screens
🏠 Damaged vents
🔧 Openings around utility penetrations
🌿 Fallen vegetation against the structure
🗑️ Debris collecting around the property
💧 New moisture and standing-water conditions

To a homeowner, some of these may look like minor storm damage.

To a rodent searching for shelter...

they can represent an opportunity.

🐀 THAT'S WHY RODENT PREPAREDNESS STARTS BEFORE THE STORM.

Before severe weather arrives, walk around the exterior and pay particular attention to:

🔎 ROOFLINES & SOFFITS
Look for loose, damaged or deteriorating areas that could become worse during high winds.

🔎 GARAGE & EXTERIOR DOORS
Check door sweeps, weatherstripping and gaps around the frame.

🔎 UTILITY PENETRATIONS
Inspect where plumbing, electrical wiring, A/C lines and other utilities enter the building.

🔎 VENTS & OPENINGS
Make sure protective screening and covers are secure.

🔎 TREES & VEGETATION
Trim limbs away from the roof when appropriate and keep dense vegetation from creating easy pathways toward the structure.

🔎 FOOD & GARBAGE
Secure trash containers, pet food, bird seed and other accessible food sources.

BUT THE INSPECTION AFTER THE STORM MAY BE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT.

Once conditions are safe, walk the property again.

Don't simply ask:

“Did the house survive the storm?”

Ask:

“DID THE STORM CREATE A NEW WAY IN?”

Compare the property with what you saw beforehand.

Look for new gaps.

Damaged screening.

Shifted roof components.

Debris.

Broken vents.

Openings around the garage.

Tree limbs touching the structure.

And anything else that changed during the storm.

🐀 REMEMBER: RODENTS DON'T NEED A FRONT DOOR.

They take advantage of openings that are easy to overlook.

And once rodents establish themselves inside an attic, garage, wall void or other protected area, solving the problem can become much more complicated than preventing entry in the first place.

That's why exclusion is such an important part of rodent management.

Trapping may address rodents that are already inside.

But if the entry points remain open...

another rodent can simply take their place.

BEFORE THE STORM:

Reinspect. Compare. Correct.

SEPTEMBER 3 — THE DAY AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE WAS FORMALLY RECOGNIZED

243 YEARS AGO, A WAR ENDED—AND A NATION STEPPED FORWARD.

On September 3, 1783, representatives of the United States and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Paris, formally ending the American Revolutionary War.

For eight long years, Americans had fought for something that, at the beginning of the Revolution, seemed almost impossible:

Independence.

The Declaration of Independence had announced that vision in 1776.

American soldiers, sailors, militia members, families and communities then endured years of hardship to defend it.

There were victories.

There were devastating defeats.

There were brutal winters.

Shortages.

Disease.

Families separated by war.

And thousands of Americans who would never live to see the country they had helped create finally recognized as an independent nation.

Then came September 3, 1783.

With the Treaty of Paris, Great Britain formally recognized the United States of America as free, sovereign and independent.

THE REVOLUTION WAS OVER.

But America's work was only beginning.

The new nation still faced enormous questions.

How would thirteen former colonies govern themselves?

How would they remain united?

What would citizenship mean?

How would the ideals expressed during the Revolution be translated into a functioning government?

Those questions would help shape the Constitutional Convention, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights—and debates that Americans continue to have generations later.

But on September 3, 1783, one historic question had finally been answered:

THE UNITED STATES WOULD STAND AS AN INDEPENDENT NATION.

Today, 243 years later, we remember the Americans whose courage, endurance and sacrifice made that moment possible.

The soldiers who fought.

The families who supported them.

The communities that endured years of uncertainty.

And the generation that accepted the extraordinary challenge of creating something the world had rarely seen:

A new nation built around the idea of self-government.

US Independence was declared in 1776.

On September 3, 1783, it was formally recognized.

Today, we remember one of the defining dates in the American story.

🇺🇸 SEPTEMBER 2 — REMEMBERING THE END OF WORLD WAR II

81 YEARS AGO, THE GUNS FELL SILENT.

On September 2, 1945, representatives of Imperial Japan formally signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

After nearly six years of global war—and almost four years of American involvement in the conflict—World War II was officially over.

For millions of Americans, it was a moment they had prayed would come.

Families could finally begin looking toward the return of sons, daughters, husbands, wives, brothers and sisters who had served around the world.

Factories that had supported an unprecedented wartime effort could begin returning to peacetime.

Communities could begin looking toward a future that, only months earlier, had remained uncertain.

But victory carried an enormous cost.

More than 400,000 American service members never returned home.

Behind that number were families who would never again hear a familiar voice at the dinner table.

Parents who lost children.

Children who grew up without parents.

Spouses whose futures changed forever.

And countless Veterans who returned home carrying memories of experiences that would remain with them for the rest of their lives.

SO TODAY IS MORE THAN AN ANNIVERSARY OF VICTORY.

It is a day to remember service.

Sacrifice.

Courage.

Duty.

And an extraordinary generation of Americans—both in uniform and on the home front—who answered when their country needed them.

On the deck of the USS Missouri that morning, General Douglas MacArthur spoke words that captured the hope of a world exhausted by war:

“Today the guns are silent.”

Those words represented something people across the world had desperately waited years to hear.

81 YEARS LATER, WE REMEMBER.
