The Metroplex Board met last night and approved investments by developers of over $10 million in new projects in Schenectady County including two new buildings on Maxon Road, a new building at 302 Front Street, an expansion of the Homewood Suites Hotel in Glenville, and the renovation of former office space to create seven new apartments on the Proctors Block.

We thank the Rotterdam Town Board and Town Supervisor Polimeni for approving last night an amendment to the Town’s battery storage law to allow GE Vernova (GEV) and Form Energy to move forward with a $12 million investment at the main GEV campus in downtown Schenectady. Thank you!

❗️⚓ UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the historic Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief will unfortunately be unable to make its scheduled stop at Mohawk Harbor today.

Late last night, notification was received from the NYS Canal Corporation that the Waterford Flight of Locks is temporarily closed due to a mechanical issue and will remain closed until further notice, requiring adjustments to the Back to Buffalo Voyage itinerary.

As a result, the planned stop in Schenectady at Mohawk Harbor will no longer take place, and the vessel is expected to continue west once the Waterford Flight reopens.

While disappointing, excitement remains for a future opportunity to welcome the Seneca Chief back to Schenectady. The celebrated replica vessel offers a unique connection to New York’s canal history and the extraordinary role the Erie Canal played in shaping communities across the state, including Schenectady County.

The Capital Region Land Bank has its next demolition and asbestos remediation bid out. Bids are due on June 22nd. Once the bid is awarded, our focused effort to replace blighted properties with new or renovated homes will continue at the following locations:

- 566 Crane Street will be demolished.
- 1014 Pleasant Street will be demolished – site to be used by BCNI for new home construction
- 1401 Crane St and 638 Hamilton St will be demolished -- site to be used for new modular home construction by the Land Bank
- Asbestos abatement at 929 and 1001 Pleasant Street plus demo of a garage -- BCNI to renovate two homes on site.

The Canal Boat Seneca Chief will return to Schenectady's Mohawk Harbor this Saturday, June 6 with a brief welcome ceremony at 4:15 p.m., and then guided boat tours will be available from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public of all ages.

Metroplex has received so much positive feedback on the “Locomotive Mural” near the Amtrak stationed that was commissioned by Metroplex. Today, we installed this plaque next to the mural to give proper recognition to the muralist Hannah Williams who did such a great job!

Metroplex staff attended the annual Historic Preservation Awards last night at City Hall. Four projects where Metroplex played a role received awards including the renovation of 3 State Street, 101 State Street, the Elmer Avenue School (now Elmer Gardens) and 9 Yates Street. Congrats to all the award winners!

Work has started on a new Metroplex mural this time on Upper Union Street next to Subway. The mural will pay homage to Central Park.
