There are so many mordant variations and we urge you to experiment and find the one that works best for you. If you're not familiar with the term, mordanting is the most important process of preparing fibers to accept color. Mordanting prepares fibers to bond with natural dyes and is typically a separate immersion bath for the fibers. Many natural dyes require the use of a mordant to achieve the most durable and long lasting colors.

Though you might start with the tried and true aluminum mordants, consider trying tannin-rich extracts that not only offer a base color, they prep your fiber for more color to lay on top. Tannins can also be used as adjuncts with aluminum sulfate or aluminum acetate to further strengthen the mordant bond and that is how they are most often used because they create the best performance and results. The use of tannins is typically used with cellulose fibers as they can sometimes change the hand of protein fibers like silk and wool, so aluminum sulfate is still the best option for animal fibers.

Handwoven H**p-Cotton Yardage

Handwoven H**p-Cotton Yardage

This handwoven-h**p-cotton-yardage fabric is handwoven in rural Romanian villages from locally grown, processed and spun h**p. The fabric is vintage and no longer being produced. The towels are a sturdy plain weave in a h**p cotton blend. These towels are wonderful for the bath or kitchen and grow softer with use. They are also great for dyeing, printing or painting with natural dyes.

Sold in one yard increments. If you’d like more than one yard, simply increase the number of yards and we will send you one length of fabric. The fabric is 14-16 inches wide.
H**p possesses great strength, softness and durability while its weight and drape are similar to linen and the fabric softens with age and use. Of course, it dyes beautifully. Our handwoven h**p-cotton yardage is handwoven in rural Romanian villages from locally grown, processed and spun h**p. This fabric is vintage, woven between 50 and 80 years ago and may show the its age. Although this is an unused, first quality fabric, the fabric may contain storage and dye or soil marks, weaving irregularities, minor abrasion or holes and other indicators of a handwoven rurally made textile.

Japanese Narrow Width Cotton Fabric -Vertical Slub Stripe

Thisl Japanese fabric has a slightly irregular weave from a distinctive warp-wise slub stripe in the weaving process. We are pleased to offer this lovely slub fabric that takes indigo beautifully and is amazing for clamp type shibori. It is woven similar to silk tsumugi, or handspun, with a pleasing texture.

This narrow (approx 14 inch) blend fabric is ideal for dyeing. The fabric is bleached and should be washed prior to mordanting or dyeing, but does not need scouring. We are offering this fabric by the yard (36 inches). For orders more than 1 yard, you will receive a continuous piece of fabric, but the bolts are approximately 10-12 yards long, so longer lengths may contain shorter sections of fabric. 85% cotton, 15% h**p. Limited supply.

Handwoven H**p Ticking Stripe Fabric – Various Lengths. We have a special collection of our vintage, handwoven h**p ticking fabric. These shorter lengths and are perfect for cushions, table mats, tote bags or short runners. The fabric is a plain weave, alternating narrow cotton and h**p stripe with a blue/black/purple accent stripe at one or both ends. The h**p yarn is a warm, earthy light taupe, the cotton stripe is white cotton and the accent stripes are commercially dyed and millspun. Please note that the fabric has been in storage, sometimes for decades, and may have small holes, stains, marks and other irregularities.

This fabric is perfect for the summer patio table, or turn them into cushions or table mats. This is a sturdy handwoven fabric with both handspun and millspun yarns.
