As such I have to write tasting notes for the new releases, all 2023 vintage w**es. 2023 was nearly the perfect vintage at Cadence. I'm not sure what I could have done to improve the quality of fruit we pulled from the vineyard. As I look back on the ripeness levels, yields, and hand scrawled tasting impressions I firmly believe this is our finest vintage ever save, perhaps, 1999. Here are my *preliminary* notes for the '23 Merlot and '23 Petit Verdot:

Gaye and I chose to bottle not one but two single varietal w**es in 2023, such was the quality of the vintage to allow the earliest and latest ripening fruit from Cara Mia Vineyard to reach perfect maturation and expressiveness.

2023 Merlot
When I think of an archetype for Merlot there can be no other than Pomerol. Iron, minerals, dense plummy fruit, tannins that age forever, and incredible energy. Guess what. 2023 was an incredible growing season that allowed us to pick Merlot at numbers less than 23.5 Brix – in other words, old school Pomerol ripeness. Now, Red Mountain isn’t Pomerol (and that’s wonderful!) and this w**e has a core of dense, delicious red and purple fruit that Pomerol can’t touch, but there’s an amazing family resemblance here. Minerals, iron, herbs in the finest sense, and waves of energetic fruit that last forever. I’ll say it: this is the finest Merlot we’ve ever made and the finest example of Merlot I’ve had from this state.

2023 Petit Verdot
An archetype for Petit Verdot? Yikes, I’ve really no idea! It is such a small player on the world stage that there are a vanishingly small number of bottlings I’d consider a complete w**e much less an archetype. In the Cara Mia Vineyard we have a blank slate on which to create our own archetype. Gaye and I have been making Petit Verdot since our very first vintage, 1998, and have seen the grape express itself in many ways. In only one previous vintage, 2005, did we feel it was complete enough on its own to warrant a special bottling. The 2005 Ciel du Cheval Petit Verdot is still going strong 21 years post vintage. Our 2023 Petit Verdot eclipses the 2005. Dense but lightweight, muscular but lithe, astonishingly fruit driven yet complex, the 2023 is a study in contrasts and completeness in a grape that seldom expresses a balance and complexity this delicious. You want an archetype for Petit Verdot? Here it is.

HARVEST IS OVER! We finished this weekend by pressing eight tons of Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Our totals for the year are 24.7 tons, 65 barrels, 31 days start to finish. Magnificent fruit and nice, easy fermentations made for a fantastic vintage full of color, brightness and intensity. Thanks to Gaye, of course, and Pete, my steadfast helper these past 15 years.

Harvest is finished at Cadence! Yep, we pulled our last Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot on Wednesday 9/16. Picking the fruit any later would have yielded duller, riper, fatter, less varietally correct flavors I simply do not enjoy.

I am looking for two hale and hearty volunteers to help with the last crush of this year this Thursday 9/17. You must be comfortable with ladders, repetitive motion and lifting approximately 40 pounds (moving pick bins around.) We'll start promptly at 8:30 AM and are generally done by noon. Harvest 2026 is underway at the Cara Mia Vineyard! The crew started at 4:30 this morning and finished picking 6 tons of Merlot by 10:00 AM.
