Turns out that was an advantage.

It forced me to not over-narrow or try to use tools that weren’t built for me as a career changer.

That’s because the hiring process hasn’t changed since the 1970s.

Before I started my business, my friend invited me to be part of a club for women entrepreneurs. It was completely free, and we would attend monthly.

I loved it.

And then one day, the club showed the yearly revenue of the members. Very few of the members were making enough money to live off their business.

So fast forward to 2020. I was full-time in my business, and it has been going well so far, but it was time for me to really start building this thing.

I did the very thing I tell you not to do.

I have given a watered-down version of myself. Not unlike many of you, I still carry around my own outdated ideas about what professionalism means.

(I mean, what the f**k does that word even mean anymore. I think it was mostly full of racist ideas about hairstyles and sexism ideas about showing emotions.)

Here’s the thing - to get a job you really love and find your hiring manager match, you have to attract the right people and REPEL the wrong people.

I literally ask people to hire me as their job search strategist everyday. And I haven’t been willing to repel people.

So, with the support of my operations and marketing manager and all-around badass, Johanna, I decided to stop trying to be so palatable.

The process is going to be a little awkward.

If entering my 40s, getting diagnosed with ADHD, and seeing what I think are early signs of perimenopause didn’t get me ready for this, nothing will.
