This is Vickie Fields and Melissa Newton, co-owners and operators of Convenient Food Mart, which has been owned and operated by the same family since 1967.

Many people do not realize how much it costs local businesses to use credit and debit cards. Simply put, it’s a lot of money. Therefore, in years past, our previous policy was cash only for all lottery purchases at the register. (This is due to the fact that we do not make more than pennies on lottery purchases, so purchases by credit and debit cards removes all profit and in fact makes us lose money.) Recently, in order to make things better for our customers, we gave the option of using the credit card machines at the register if they purchased something else at the store. We did not know about the regulation banning that. Effective immediately, we will no longer allow credit or debit cards to be used at the register any more for lottery, and we apologize for our mistake. Credit and debit cards can be used at one of our three lottery machines in the dining room.

Thank you to all of our wonderful customers, and we look forward to continue to serve our community. One of us is almost always there Monday through Friday and available by phone other times, so if anyone has further problems, feel free to reach out directly.
