If you’re planning a tenant improvement or a new build in Sparks this year, the rules just changed.

As of January 1st, the grace period for the old 2018 fire codes in Washoe County is officially over. Every new submittal now has to hit the 2024 International Fire Code (IFC) standards.

I’m already seeing local business owners get caught off guard. They’re submitting plans based on "the way we’ve always done it," the 2024 code is a different beast.

You don't need to be a code expert you just need a fire protection partner who is.

Microtransactions have crept into everything the last few years. Fuel surcharges and disposal fees? They have been a reality of doing business.

There’s a big difference between covering the cost of a truck on the road and charging a customer a "Service Charge" on top of the actual charge for service or an "Admin Processing Surcharge" just to send an email. That's not a business expense, that’s a cash grab.

We’re not here to nickel-and-dime our neighbors under the guise of "technology."

🔥 Nevada Commercial Buildings: Smoke Detector Replacement Rules
No strict 10-year mandatory swap.

Per NFPA 72 (adopted in NV via NAC 477):

System detectors (e.g., Notifier FSP-951): Replace if they fail annual sensitivity tests, drift compensation, or manufacturer's guidelines (often 10 years due to sensor wear). Focus on testing/maintenance: Quarterly visuals, annual sensitivity tests by licensed pros.

Log everything for compliance & insurance.

Use certified contractors for any replacement/testing. Don't risk failures and schedule annual checks!

Did you know Nevada is a “breakdown state” for portable fire extinguishers?

For those new to fire safety: Most states follow NFPA 10 standards, which require a simple external/visual inspection annually... but an internal “breakdown” (full disassembly, cleaning, seal inspection/replacement, and reassembly) only every 6 years.

Not in Nevada. Here, the Nevada State Fire Marshal (per NAC 477) requires that full internal breakdown maintenance every SINGLE YEAR on rechargeable extinguishers — no exceptions. (Hydro-testing is still every 12 years for dry chemical types.)
