Meet Juliet Main and the team behind the High Plains Western Heritage Center! Located right here in Spearfish, this five-state regional museum has been preserving the stories, traditions, and legacy of the American West since opening in 1989.

The Heritage Center’s story began in the 1970s, when local ranchers Harry Blair, Edgar “Slim” Gardner, and others recognized the importance of preserving the history of the High Plains for future generations. Today, their vision lives on through a remarkable collection celebrating the pioneers, cowboys, ranchers, and Native Americans of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana.

Visitors can explore fascinating indoor exhibits, outdoor displays, a furnished one-room schoolhouse, and a log cabin nestled in a beautiful 40-acre pasture. With topics ranging from ranching, rodeo, and transportation to Native American history, mining, and pioneering. The Heritage Center also has a stocked bookstore and gift shop featuring books by local authors, regional history, and products from local artists and small businesses.

Juliet and the team love the Spearfish community, and are proud that The Heritage Center is more than just a museum. From offering free educational programming and school field trips to providing free admission for veterans and active-duty military, the Center works hard to make history accessible to everyone. They also support local performers, authors, artists, artisans, and community causes while generously sharing their meeting spaces with local groups.

Today is Election Day! Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The early voting site at Hudson Hall is no longer available. Spearfish City residents should vote at the Spearfish Senior Center on North 10th Street. Those who live outside of city limits should vote at the Pavilion in City Park.
