Have we talked about the Utah Professional Women in Building (PWB)? I absolutely love this organization! I've been a member for 3 years and on the executive board for 2. Finding your tribe as a female within a male dominated industry can be difficult. I've made so many friendships, attended most of the events, and been able to contribute in so many meaningful ways!

The Utah PWB hosts a monthly Utah Valley Networking Luncheon and Augusts was at The Holy Grill in Pleasant Grove. Members & Non-Members are welcome. Its wonderful opportunity to strengthen relationships, learn more about the businesses serving our local construction industry, and explore ways we can support and refer one another.

General contractors need more than someone who can reconcile the bank account.

They need a financial partner who understands job costing, WIP reporting, draw submissions, vendor compliance, construction software, and the challenges that come with managing multiple projects at once.

As a team we've invested in these certifications and platforms because we want our team to understand the systems our clients rely on and not simply enter transactions into QuickBooks. We've never accepted doing the bare minimum. Client visits are so much fun! I love learning more about construction equipment while also connecting with our clients in the field.

This month, I had the opportunity to visit John Carson, the machinist behind Carson Industrial Machine. We originally connected with John through one of our CPA referral partners, and it has been fascinating to learn more about his work.

Paying the IRS isn’t fun, but it usually means your business is doing well. It helps you qualify for loans, build business credit, and trust your numbers when making decisions. Avoiding taxes shouldn’t be the goal.

For example: buying a new pickup just to lower your tax bill when your current fleet is working fine. That truck loses value the moment you drive it off the lot and doesn’t create more work, revenue, or growth if it isn’t actually needed.

In many cases, it’s more cost-effective for the owner to take a draw, pay the taxes, and keep the business cash strong rather than tying money up in an asset that won’t move the company forward and may create additional unnecessary debt.

If it doesn’t make cash, it doesn’t make cents.
