We started a flat roof removal on this High Point home expecting a straightforward job. Instead we found four layers of shingles stacked underneath, decades of roof repair history, none of it solving the real issue.
Flat roofs like this were never designed to drain well. Every time it leaked, someone laid another layer on top instead of fixing the pitch. That buys a little time. It does not buy a solution.
Here is what an honest fix actually looks like.
We stripped it down to the deck to see the true condition, not guess at it. The client wanted the back roof re-sloped for real drainage, so we reframed it into a proper low pitch instead of patching a flat surface again. Full ice and water shield went down across the whole roof, the new shingles were tied cleanly into the existing roofline, and we finished the perimeter with a custom forged drip edge built for this house, not off a shelf.
The chimney got the same treatment. We built and installed it new in copper, a detail that will hold up for decades and stands out the way copper always does.
New 6 inch gutters and Sure-Flow TriFlow guards went on last, colorized to match the roof so the whole system looks intentional, not added on.
This is the kind of roof replacement problem you cannot see from the ground and cannot solve by adding another layer. It takes pulling everything back and being straight with the homeowner about what is actually going on up there.
