From -- a couple weeks ago. Morenci, MI, all-class high school reunion. Nice little doings in the Eagles lodge right in the middle of a nice little downtown. (They're also the Bulldogs, and use the same Yale Bulldog logo Swanton uses). Fun story -- the guy in charge of the 50-50 raffle came up to me and asked me to "draw the winner."
"Sure," I said ... "Get 'em up here and I'll ... oh." So then I stuck my hand in the fishbowl and pulled out the winning ticket.

With Saginaw making her first trip under Algoma ownership, it was time to offer updated Saginaw art in the On the Lakes store. There's a new standalone poster print (also available as a digital download) and a history poster that includes her with her Algoma stack colors and the blue stripe Algoma painted on her bow to hide the Lower Lakes company banner. One hopes Saginaw's next five-year drydocking includes an Algoma-blue hull paint job.

I was part of a project a few years ago to try to interest Dolly Parton in a merch line. It never went anywhere, through no fault of the people in the project. But it was the only time I ever tried to draw Dolly (who, I'm told, kinda liked this drawing).
I post it today because ... we lost one of the good people today.

Sorry to learn this morning of the death on Sunday of Patrick Oliphant, my editorial cartooning hero, at the age of 90.
He took no prisoners, and reinvigorated the field of American editorial cartooning when he came to the United States from Australia in the late 1960s. He saw it as his job to draw backlash, no matter what side of the political fence his targets were on. Unfortunately for all of us, he was largely retired due to health issues by the time Trump came on the scene; I wonder what he and MacNelly and Mike Royko would have had to say.
I met him once, and quite by accident, at a Festival of Cartoon Art in Columbus in 2001, just a few weeks after 9/11. I had found myself seated between two people who insisted on having a conversation through me as if I were not there, so reseated myself at another table. I was watching the stage when there was a tap on my shoulder and a diffident Aussie accent was asking me: "Excuse me ... is that camera a Sony?"
I turned around and was looking at my hero, who very much wanted to talk cameras. Of course we did. And then I asked someone to take this photo.
