I work with a lot of executives who've hit the point in their careers where another promotion just isn't as exciting anymore. Instead, the idea of building a business of their own is much more attractive!

In this article, a former Wall Street exec shares a few lessons from his journey into multi-unit franchise ownership.

A few highlights:

→ Corporate experience is a real asset, but franchise ownership pulls you into day-to-day operations in a way that can feel unfamiliar.

→ Think past unit one - plan for scale from the very beginning.

→ Revenue was the goal in corporate; margins run the show in business ownership.

→ The identity shift that comes with going from "manager" to "owner.” Accountability feels different when you're the owner, and it's a big part of what makes business ownership so rewarding!

If you're weighing a change in your career, I'd love to hear what's pulling you toward it. Comment below, or schedule a quick call with me to chat in person!

I've been so impressed with the health & wellness franchise space lately!

The global wellness economy just crossed $6.8 trillion, and health & wellness is now the third-largest franchised industry in the U.S. According to the IFA, average unit revenue for businesses in this space topped $1 million as recently as 2024.

But the real story is why it's growing: Millennials and Gen Z (with over 41% of all wellness spend) aren't buying gym memberships anymore. Instead, they're investing in recovery and longevity: red light therapy, cryotherapy, cold plunge, massage, biohacking, weight loss support, etc. It's a whole wellness ecosystem now!

The franchise model is a great fit for businesses in this space - recurring membership revenue, loyal clients, price points for every market, and a lot more.

If you’re looking for your next move, this could be a great opportunity!

Loving your daily latte doesn't mean you're built to run the coffee shop.

It’s actually a pretty common assumption: someone falls in love with a business as a customer and believes that they would also enjoy being the one to own that business. But being a fan of a product/brand and being the business owner are two very different things.

Take that coffee shop dream. Are you ready for the 4 a.m. alarm, the constant staffing churn, and the razor-thin margins on every $5 transaction? It might be right for someone, but it’s not for everyone.

At the end of the day, the best franchise for you needs to fit the life you actually want to live. Do you want early mornings or flexible hours? Hands-on involvement every day or more oversight-focused? Fast-paced and reactive or steady and predictable? You can run a business really well and still be unhappy if the business model doesn’t match your own rhythm and flow.

Before you fall for a franchise, think about what it would be like to actually run that business. That's why it's so important to do your research. Understand exactly how the business generates revenue, what drives costs, and what a typical day actually looks like. If you can clearly explain how the business works to someone else, you're on the right track.

Finding the RIGHT fit (not just the first brand that catches your attention) is exactly what I help my clients do! If you’re considering opening a franchise business, I’d love to help you explore.

Here's how to know if a franchise business is the right path for you...

The first step is to reflect on your goals, working style, and long-term vision. Ask yourself the following questions:

🗺️ Do you prefer structure or flexibility?
Franchising offers a structured business model, which is ideal for people who appreciate clear guidelines. But a structured model might feel limiting to people who crave total creative freedom or frequent change.

⚙️ Are you comfortable following a system?
Success in franchising depends on your ability to stick to a proven system. If you’re more inclined to invent your own processes...this model may feel restrictive.

💲 Can you invest time and capital for the long haul?
Just like any new business, franchise ownership requires both financial commitment and daily operational involvement. It’s not a passive investment, especially in the early years.

🎯 Are you prepared to be both a leader and a team player within a brand?
Franchisees often have to wear multiple hats. They lead their local teams while also collaborating with the franchisor and adhering to brand-wide standards. Balancing autonomy with accountability is key.

Some franchisors don't share their numbers. That should tell you something!

Item 19 of the FDD is where a franchisor can disclose real financial performance data on their existing units…and it's optional. When it's missing, it's usually because the numbers wouldn't help the sale. Without that data, you're left guessing at what your investment could actually return (and nobody wants to take THAT risk!)

This is exactly why the vetting we do at FranNet matters so much. Before a brand is ever shown to a client, we've already looked closely at its track record, growth trajectory, and overall strength as a business. My clients aren't starting from scratch. Instead, they're only looking at brands that have already proven they're worth consideration.

It's a lot of digging on our end, so our clients don't have to guess on theirs.

"Don't simply retire from something; have something to retire to."
- Harry Emerson Fosdick

It's such a simple shift in thinking, but also pretty profound! Retirement isn't just closing a chapter...it's what you choose to open next.

Instead of just sitting on the couch and kicking up their feet, the people who make the transition into retirement well are the ones who move toward something: a passion project, a business of their own, more time with family, a cause they care about.

So if retirement is on your horizon, here's the big question: what are you retiring to?

I'd love to hear it! Or, if you'd like to see how business ownership fits into your retirement plan, let's chat!

"Is franchising risky?" is a question that sometimes comes up in a first conversation with someone exploring business ownership.

The honest answer: no business is risk-free. But franchising reduces the risk you're taking on, compared to starting a business from scratch - a tested model instead of a guess, real training and support, and a brand name people already trust before you even open your doors. Research backs it up too: franchises show a real survival edge in those first, most vulnerable years.

"So what does a franchise consultant actually do?"
Here's the short version:
I help people figure out if franchise ownership is right for them, and if so, which brand actually fits.

🔎 We research, vet, and validate the top performing franchises out there, so you aren't wading through thousands of options alone.

🤝 I get to know you - your skills, interests, and what you want out of business (and life). Then, I present several brands that are a good match for your goals!

🧭 I walk alongside you through the research process, giving you the tools and experience to make a genuinely great decision.

And the best part is that my services are 100% free to you. I'm paid by the franchisor when there’s a match, so my incentive is to get it right for you.

Thinking about franchise ownership? I'd love to hear your questions in the comments. Or, send me a message and let’s set up a quick discovery call!
