SECURITY SHOULD BE MANAGED LIKE AN OPERATION — NOT JUST A SCHEDULE.

A security schedule answers one basic question:
Who is supposed to be on-site?

But effective security requires more than filling posts.

A well-managed security operation should continuously ask:
ASSESS — What risks, vulnerabilities, and recurring problems are we dealing with?
DEPLOY — What personnel, procedures, and resources are needed to address them?
VERIFY — Is the security plan actually being executed the way it was designed?
IMPROVE — What needs to change based on incidents, trends, and performance?

Because putting an officer on-site is only one part of security.

Management is what connects staffing to performance.

That means understanding the risks, setting clear expectations, verifying ex*****on, identifying problems, and making adjustments when necessary.

How do you know whether your security company is actually performing?

Start with these five warning signs:

1. You're constantly chasing reports or updates.
You shouldn't have to hunt down your provider to understand what's happening at your property.

2. Officer call-offs become your problem.
Coverage failures should trigger a planned response—not last-minute scrambling by your team.

3. You can't verify patrol activity.
If patrols are part of the security plan, you should have a reasonable way to confirm they're being completed.

4. The same incidents keep happening.
Recurring problems should trigger review, pattern identification, and corrective action.

5. You're managing the security company.
Constant reminders, follow-ups, and escalations may mean your security provider is adding management burden instead of reducing it.

No security operation is perfect.

But the goal shouldn't simply be to have officers on-site.

The goal is to have a security operation you can rely on, evaluate, and continuously improve.

A security guard was among the three people who tragically lost their lives in the San Diego Islamic center shooting, according to police.

As security professionals, we don’t get to choose when or where violence occurs. But we can prepare our mindset. Continuously assessing your environment, identifying potential cover or concealment, and recognizing vulnerabilities are essential habits. If you find yourself in a post with limited protection, it’s important to consider additional measures or adjustments that could improve your safety and the safety of those you’re responsible for.

May the three individuals who lost their lives rest in peace. My prayers are with their families, loved ones, and the entire community affected by this tragedy.

Be safe. Be aware. Be a difficult Target!
