Lights. Siren. No fire. No firefighter.

For months, someone drove a privately owned fire truck around Limerick, Maine with the lights flashing and the siren going. Neighbors heard it. There was never an emergency. The town's own fire department had to post that the truck wasn't theirs. (Portland Press Herald, 10/27)

Six at night. Six in daylight.

That's the charge sheet from ONE self-storage facility in Winchendon, MA: twelve breaking-and-entering counts each for two people, a 12:23 a.m. run on Sept. 12 and a Monday-morning run on Sept. 14 (Monadnock Ledger-Transcript). Police suspect the same pair hit storage lots in Marlborough, Greenville and Peterborough, NH. In Marlborough, the units that got hit were on standard padlocks (MyKeeneNow).

Here's the problem with a storage lot: in daylight, someone cutting a lock looks exactly like a tenant who lost a key.

Your tenants pick the lock. You pick everything else: the gate, the lights, the cameras, and who's actually watching them.

They skipped the clubhouse.

Weekend of Oct. 17-18, a crew hit the storage building at a Pembroke country club and left with generators, leaf blowers, copper wire and batteries, about $6,000 worth (Boston 25). A camera caught the van pulling out. Police knew that van from a September run on another local business; Flock plates and two search warrants in Whitman got most of it back.

Here's the tell: the building with the alarm, the lights and the staff is almost never the building with the inventory. The barn out back is.

The robbery was staged. The serial numbers weren't.

West Roxbury, Sept. 2024: a masked man hands a teller a note. The teller skips his drawer, walks into the vault, and fills a bag with $197,146 for his own brother. On camera, it was a robbery. The crime was the trip to the vault.

Hours later, a search of their house turned up $160,000+ in cash, including ten $100 bills the credit union had logged by serial number before the note ever hit the counter. Both brothers were sentenced in federal court Monday (U.S. Attorney's Office, via the Boston Globe and Boston 25).

The alarm did its job at 4:45 a.m. Sunday. It told Attleboro police someone was inside a middle school. It couldn't tell them where.

By the time officers worked through the building, lockers had been gone through, 13 window screens were torn, and the suspect turned up sitting in a police cruiser outside, a student's property on him. (WPRI 12 / NBC Boston)

The ATM was bolted to the floor. They brought a truck.

Bristol, VT, Sunday, 4:00 to 4:15 a.m.: front doors forced, a vehicle ripped the anchored ATM off its moorings, four cases of vapes gone. The owners live behind the store and woke to it. By dinner, troopers found the machine in a gravel pit (Vermont State Police). A bank ATM building in Shaftsbury was hit the same weekend.

Bolts don't stop a thief. They slow one down. Fifteen minutes only matters if someone is already on the way.
