Small Business Majority led a coalition of more than 110 local, state and national organizations expressing support for a joint Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that would overturn the Small Business Administration's (SBA) recent restrictions barring small businesses owned by green card holders from accessing the agency’s 7(a) and 504 loan programs.

SBA’s flagship lending programs approved more than 6,100 7(a) and 504 loans for small businesses partly owned by green card holders in FY2025, totaling over $5.5 billion in capital for Main Street businesses that supported over 80,000 American jobs.

In our recent blog, we profile Jason Wilburn who never intended to work in the healthcare industry when he and his wife, Annabelle, bought Paul Wissmach Glass Company in Paden City, W.Va., five years ago. Yet their commitment to offering high quality benefits to their employees has forced Jason to spend weeks evaluating health insurance plans – and that means less time dedicated to his business.

"At least for a few weeks a year, I'm in the healthcare business instead of glassmaking," Jason said. "I'm the decision maker for 35 employees on what doctors they get to choose, and I don't have any expertise in that area."

Jason covers 90% of the insurance premium for his employees to make health coverage attainable for them. But with around 15% of payroll costs going to healthcare, this is a significant expense for the business. Jason tries to shield his employees from rising healthcare costs but it's impossible to absorb everything. After all, there's been annual double-digit premium increases for healthcare premiums since they bought the business, and this year he's had to increase the biweekly employee payroll deduction by $10. As a result, some of his employees have dropped their coverage because they can't afford any additional expenses. Read the blog to learn more about what it means to Jason to be a rural employer.

Did you know you can receive up to $2,000 per employee who uses California's state-run paid family leave program? These grants help businesses offset costs associated with employees taking Paid Family Leave, including cross-training current staff and hiring and training new or temporary employees to maintain operations during an employee's absence. Businesses with up to 100 employees may qualify if at least one employee used California Paid Family Leave on or after June 30, 2026.
