Make sure your accounting system can handle complex restricted grant tracking and be sure you know these 4 things about restricted grants!

Image Text:
LEGALLY BINDING
Restricted funds must be used exactly how they are outlined in the grant agreement, be sure you understand the terms carefully and that you will have enough funds to cover overhead or other costs that may be needed to run the organization. Make sure you're aware of timing deadlines for when funds must be used by!

REPORTING & AUDITS
Some donors require detailed reports or annual audits by an external accounting firm, be sure your accounting systems are ready to handle these requirements so that you're not missing out on any opportunities

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESTRICTIONS
Grants made for a specific purpose are considered "purpose restrictions," the funds are held and released for use when the grant requirements are met

Multi-year pledges are considered "Time Restricted" these are recorded as income when pledged and held as time restricted until received

RESTRICTED OR...NOT?
Have consistent policies for receiving donations, don't just go on a conversation with a donor, have a consistent process and documentation for how donors can make restricted contributions, decide if and what kind of restricted donations you're willing to receive ahead of time

Watch out for unrelated business income and taxes! This is a complicated tax issue many nonprofit leaders and accountants are not familiar with

Nonprofit Tip!
Watch out for unrelated business income taxes!
Nonprofits can be subject to a tax on unrelated business income, consider this in your planning and make sure it is properly reported.
UBIT may apply to:
Income over $1,000
Business activity regularly carried on (ie not a 1x fundraiser)
Business activity not directly related to the mission (ie a museum bookstore or hotdog stand to raise funds for the nonprofit)
Advertising revenue is the most common!
