In communities like ours, the people answering emergency calls are often the same people we see at the grocery store, at community events, or cheering from the sidelines on Friday nights.

They're our neighbors, friends, and family members. And when something goes wrong, they're the ones who show up.

On National First Responders Day, we want to recognize the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, and volunteers who serve Washington and the surrounding Beaufort County communities.

Whether responding to a house fire, assisting during severe weather, providing emergency medical care, or helping someone through an unexpected crisis, their willingness to serve makes a meaningful difference.

Their commitment is especially important in smaller communities, where neighbors look out for one another and local emergency services play such an essential role.

Utility closets have a way of becoming extra storage space. A box here, a few cleaning supplies there, and suddenly it's hard to reach the equipment inside.

Water heaters, HVAC systems, and electrical panels need appropriate clearance for safe operation, inspection, and maintenance.

Take a minute to check what's stored around yours. Keep access clear, follow equipment clearance requirements, and avoid storing combustible materials near heat sources.

A little organization today can make maintenance (and unexpected problems) much easier to manage.

Most of us probably couldn't tell you what the wall behind our dresser looks like. And why would we? It's been sitting in the same spot for years, and everything else in the room looks perfectly fine.

But sometimes, moving a piece of furniture reveals something you weren't expecting.

Large furniture placed tightly against an exterior wall can restrict airflow, creating an area where conditions are different from the rest of the room. If that wall is cooler than the surrounding air, especially during periods of high indoor humidity, condensation may develop on its surface. Over time, that moisture can contribute to discoloration, peeling paint, musty odors, or even mold growth.

And here's what makes it tricky: the rest of the room might look and feel completely normal.

Of course, finding discoloration behind furniture doesn't automatically mean there's a serious moisture problem. It could be related to condensation, an unnoticed leak, or something else entirely. Understanding the source is important before deciding how to address it.

Here in Eastern North Carolina, where humidity is a familiar part of life, it's worth paying attention to these overlooked spaces. Keeping indoor humidity under control, allowing some airflow around large furniture, and occasionally checking behind items placed against exterior walls can help you recognize potential problems earlier.

You don't need to rearrange your entire house looking for trouble. But the next time you move a dresser, bookshelf, or bed, take a moment to look at the wall behind it.

Sometimes the most revealing part of a room is the part you almost never see.

This time of year in Eastern North Carolina, the weather can go back and forth fast.

One day feels cool enough to throw the windows open, and the next is back in the upper 80s with plenty of humidity still in the air. After a water loss, that matters.

Opening windows may feel like it would help a room dry out, but outside air can also bring in additional moisture. Then the AC has to work harder trying to manage both the temperature and the humidity.

Drying a structure is not just about making the room feel less stuffy. It's about creating the right conditions so moisture can actually leave the affected materials.

That is one reason restoration professionals want windows and exterior doors kept closed while drying equipment is running.

Why would we check a room that never had visible water in it?

Because water can travel through a building in ways that are not always obvious.

Moisture may move underneath flooring, along wall assemblies, or through connected materials before any visible staining, swelling, or discoloration appears. By the time you can see the damage, the affected area may already extend beyond the room where the problem started.

That's why moisture checks often include adjacent rooms, hallways, and other connected areas. The visible damage gives us a clue, but the moisture readings help us understand the rest.

Peak season isn’t the finish line.

The Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30, and the National Hurricane Center notes that most tropical cyclone activity historically occurs between mid-August and mid-October. In Eastern North Carolina, that makes September a time to stay prepared, not start packing the storm supplies away.

Take a few minutes to refresh the basics: medications, flashlights, charging options, important documents, supplies for pets, and anything else your household would need if normal routines were interrupted.

It's also a good time to review your insurance coverage. For those considering National Flood Insurance Program coverage, new policies typically have a 30-day waiting period before coverage takes effect, with limited exceptions. Waiting until a storm is approaching may be too late.

Preparation works a lot better before there’s a storm on the map.

Twenty-five years later, we still remember the lives lost, the heroes who emerged, and the resilience that united a nation.

A good property-emergency plan is not just about knowing where the water shutoff is.

It's also about knowing who can get into the property, who can make decisions, and who has the information needed to move things forward if you are unavailable.

That might mean:

• A trusted family member with a spare key
• An HOA or property manager
• An after-hours business contact
• Someone who knows where insurance information is kept
• An authorized person who can approve emergency work

When water, fire, or storm damage happens, delays are not always caused by the restoration work itself. Sometimes the biggest obstacle is simply figuring out who has access and who can say “go.”

A few minutes spent organizing that information now can save a lot of confusion later.
