Softball families, this one's for you.

Fall ball is wrapping up. The hard part of the next five months is keeping her throwing and catching when it's 30 degrees out and dark by 5:00.

Here's what works in a basement or garage:
Wall ball — 50 throws off a wall, glove work on every rebound.
Short hops — partner on knees 10 feet apart, short hops only. Builds soft hands fast.
Front toss — underhand from behind a screen, 3 rounds of 10.

Watch where your hitter puts the tee. Nine times out of ten it's dead centre, belt high. Every rep, all winter.

Then in the first game in April he gets a fastball on the outside corner and rolls it over to second.

Pitchers don't throw down the middle on purpose. Practice shouldn't live there either.

A simple off-season tee routine:
Inside pitch — tee out in front of the plate. Pull it.
Middle — tee even with the front hip. Back up the middle.
Outside — tee deeper in the zone. Let it travel and drive it the other way.
10 swings at each spot, then change the height and go again.

A 30-second check that will help almost every youth hitter you know.

Ask your player to grip the bat the way he does at the plate, then look at where the handle sits.

If the bat is buried in his palms, two things are happening. He is losing barrel whip, because the wrists cannot work freely. And every ball off the handle is going to sting, which quietly teaches him to bail out on inside pitches.

Move the bat out into the fingers. Line the knuckles up roughly. Ease the grip pressure off to about a 4 out of 10. Most kids pick up bat speed inside a week just from that.
