In the deep of the night, at the darkest hour, a storm comes. Lightening strikes with a violence that is beyond words. Unseen winds create chaos. Torrential rain penetrates and the streets become rivers. During the fiercest of storms, we lose power.

This is a metaphor for the storms of life—the natural disasters, the financial crises, the personal losses, and even pandemics. Good leaders do not lose power. Their power comes from a different source—one that does not go out during a storm. And good leaders become that same guiding light throughout the storms at your business. Where do leaders go when they need help? Leaders must have mentors, too. Where do you turn? In whom do you trust?

Situations arise that are difficult to assess. There are a lot of moving parts. Solutions are evasive. But answers can come from the strangest of places. We all have guides, whether in an etheric plane or right here on Earth. Often, our guides come to us in mysterious and unexpected ways—a song that comes on the radio, a person in the street, or an email out of the blue. Help comes when requested. Ask. Notice. Pick up on the subtle comments of others. Watch for signs. And most of all, think involution. Return to your place of intuition and feel the answers emerge.

What went on here? The morning after a wild party—not a pretty sight. Is there a wake of disaster, following a busy crunch?

Some businesses may demonstrate an addiction to urgency. The intoxication of a rush is satisfying to many people. And the ensuing chaos is validating that hard work has been done here. Hectic days can not always be avoided. In a thriving business there will be times when it is all about putting out fires. But what happens later? Do we really take the time to restore, rest, balance, and put things right? In the retail environment, the heat of the selling floor is a stressful and demanding experience. There is a let-down after the customers have all gone home. In comparison, the clean up may feel unimportant, and we might be too worn out to care about it. But the process of putting things back where they belong, and preparing for the next busy spell, is an essential activity, that keeps us in the rhythm of the business, and in the cycles of commerce and the economy at large.

Where did that come from? What did he mean? Why would she say that? Marcellus would refer to this as "something rotten in the state of Denmark”.

These questions above often come to mind when someone has thrown us a curve ball. We know that some statements, and actions, come through as reactive. Not everyone is skilled in the art of effective communication. Good leaders need to learn to sift through the dirt to find the gold. We must be masters of analysis, as well as psychiatrists and detectives. When working in an organization, leaders must become adept at uncovering the truth. When to call out “bull hockey” is another matter. Consider the source. Get out your shovel. Read between the lines. Look beneath the surface. Insight is key!

“Surety brings ruin.” But don’t take my word for it--ask Socrates.

Your business is as sacred as the temple of Apollo. Within your walls, do you hear the voices of the Oracles? Are they guiding you to lead through philosophical wisdom? Are you listening? Decisions should never be made without pause. This gives time for reflection and consideration. Good leaders are aware that they are often not fully informed. Or perhaps there are perspectives not yet considered. Do you know a leader who embodies the “shoot first, ask questions later” mantra? How does that work for the company? Here’s another teaching from the classical brilliance of Aristotle: “The more you know, the more you know you don't know.”
