The Doom File, No. 11: The Mall Reductionist.
A narrow read produces a narrow shortlist.
'There is nothing to do here' describes an itinerary, not a city. It is also completely fair as a report on what somebody actually did.
This one has no data answer and we are not going to invent one. Nobody has ever been argued into finding a place interesting.
It does have a consequence, and the consequence is a shortlist. A buyer who believes the city is malls buys beside malls, and then underwrites the same three submarkets as everybody else.
Amenity is the variable most buyers assert and least often examine. What you intend to do on a Saturday decides which side of this city you should own, and it is almost never asked.
The coast and the inland are two products here, held by two different sorts of owner. A read that flattens them into one city tends to shortlist neither of them well.
We are paid whichever submarket you choose, which makes this the cheapest advice we give. Go and see the parts of the city nobody markets before you draw up the shortlist.
The concession. The malls are enormous, and in August they are genuinely where the city goes. Anyone pretending the summer does not reorganise life here has not spent one.
We cannot make a city interesting to you. We can stop a narrow read becoming an expensive one. The shortlist is the point where a taste claim turns into money.
