FEDSAS welcomes the firm leadership shown by Minister Siviwe Gwarube MP and supports her decision regarding the foundation phase National Catalogue.

We remain convinced that educators and schools should have freedom to choose the best learning and teaching materials for the needs of their learners and school communities. If getting the process right takes a little longer, so be it. The best interests of the child must come first.

At the same time, taxpayers are entitled to expect transparency, accountability and value for every rand invested in education.

FEDSAS verwelkom die sterk leierskap wat Minister Siviwe Gwarube toon en ondersteun haar besluit oor die grondslagfase se Nasionale Katalogus.

Ons is oortuig dat opvoeders en skole keusevryheid behoort te hê om die beste leer- en onderrigmateriaal te kies wat in die behoeftes van hul leerders en skoolgemeenskappe voorsien.

As dit beteken dat die proses ’n bietjie langer moet duur om dit behoorlik te doen, dan is dit die regte keuse. Die beste belang van die kind moet altyd voorop staan.

Terselfdertyd is belastingbetalers geregtig op deursigtigheid, verantwoordbaarheid en waarde vir elke rand wat in onderwys belê word.

New rules are being proposed for teacher-learner WhatsApp communication, but will another policy solve the real problem?

Speaking on 702, FEDSAS Deputy CEO Riaan van der Bergh stressed that the concern is not the technology itself, but the behaviour and blurred professional boundaries.

Schools, educators and parents all have a role to play in keeping communication transparent, professional and safe.

Strong school governance is about more than attending meetings. It requires people who understand their responsibilities, make informed decisions and work together in the best interests of the entire school community.

An effective SGB is built on:

✔️ Clear roles and responsibilities
✔️ Transparent decision-making
✔️ Active parent involvement
✔️ Sound financial oversight
✔️ A shared vision for the school’s future
✔️ Accountability and ethical leadership
✔️ Ongoing training and development

When these foundations are in place, an SGB can lead with confidence, support its school effectively and help create an environment in which every learner can thrive.
