BREAKING NEWS: Government Garage strips Mangaung Metro of 34 vehicles over unpaid debt.

The Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, through Government Garage, has dealt a major blow to Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality after repossessing at least 34 municipal vehicles due to outstanding payments.

Information obtained by STEP UP SA NEWS indicates that the seized fleet includes:

3 BMW motorcycles
4 Chevrolet vehicles
4 Nissan vehicles
19 Volkswagen vehicles
1 Ford vehicle
3 Toyota vehicles

Sources indicate that 24 of the vehicles were allocated to the Traffic Department, while the remaining 10 belonged to Corporate Services.

The removal of the vehicles is expected to severely affect service delivery and law enforcement operations within the metro, worse with 30 June earmarked to be national shutdown.

In May, 148people were arrested during a protest in Mangaung.

Just last week, Mangaung Metro shut at least five tuckshops in Thaba Nchu due to noncompliance.

However, STEP UP SA NEWS can confirm that vehicles assigned to political office bearers, including those used by the Executive Mayor, Chief Whip and other senior politicians, were not among those collected by the Government Garage.

Sources within the Department of Community Safety Roads and Transport explain that that Mangaung Metro owes Government Garage more than R23 million in unpaid fees.

Municipal spokesperson Hilary Mophethe and Acting City Manager Nicolette Maysiels had not responded to questions sent by STEP UP SA NEWS at the time of publication.

VF Plus spaar Mangaung-ondernemings duisende in stortingsterrein-stryd

Die VF Plus het ’n groot oorwinning vir Mangaung se sakegemeenskap en inwoners behaal deur buitensporige stortingsterrein-heffings af te weer wat ondernemings duisende rande sou kos.

Die metro se oorspronklike 2026/27-begroting het voorsien dat sekere ondernemings tussen R130 000 en R330 000 per maand aan stortingstariewe sou betaal – ’n onvolhoubare las vir kleinsake-eienaars. Kontrakteurs sou boonop tussen R150 en R700 per vrag vir algemene afval en tot R1 000 per vrag vir bourommel moes opdok.

Hoewel tariewe nodig is vir instandhouding en rehabilitasie van stortingsterreine, kan inwoners en ondernemings nie gedwing word om nóg meer te betaal terwyl die metro self versuim om infrastruktuur, weegbrûe en terreine te onderhou nie.

Eenmalige vragte van meer as 500 kg is drasties verlaag, en inwoners of nie-geregistreerde gebruikers betaal nou slegs R30 in stede van R150 per vrag.

Vir kontrakteurs is bekostigbare maandelikse voertuigfooie ingestel wat die vorige per-vrag heffings vervang: bakkies betaal R250, bakkies met sleepwaens R450, bakkies met “skips” en vragmotors tot vier ton R650, en groter vragmotors R850 per maand.

Verder is ’n gefasseerde implementeringsplan oor vyf jaar ingestel om ondernemings kans te gee om aan te pas, met ’n 75%-afslag in die tweede jaar (2027/28). ’n Eenmalige registrasiefooi van R400 bied kontrakteurs toegang tot die laer tariewe en bevorder verantwoordelike afvalbestuur.

Hierdie oorwinning bring verligting vir ondernemings én inwoners wat uiteindelik die prys betaal wanneer ondernemings onder onvolhoubare kostes gebuk gaan.

Die VF Plus staan vir billike tariewe en volhoubare finansiële bestuur. Mangaung se inwoners verdien werklike dienslewering, nie nóg heffings op vervallende infrastruktuur nie.

Op 4 November 2026 kan kiesers die VF Plus steun vir werklike verbetering in Mangaung.
