Seven Zimbabwean nationals have each been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after being convicted of stealing and damaging critical Eskom infrastructure in the Free State.

According to information supplied, the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court handed down the sentences on 20 August 2026. Five of the seven men reportedly received an additional 12 months’ imprisonment for being in South Africa illegally.

The case dates back to 20 November 2022, when members of the Bloemfontein Flying Squad intercepted the suspects on the N6 while they were travelling from the Eastern Cape towards Bloemfontein.

Copper reportedly valued at more than R100 000 was recovered, while an electricity transformer valued at approximately R2.5 million had been damaged.

The sentences bring the nearly four-year case to a conclusion and follow ongoing efforts to combat the theft and destruction of critical electricity infrastructure.
