Today is International E-Waste Day. ♻️

🔺 In Europe, 42.8% of e-waste is formally collected and recycled.

🔻In Africa, less than 1% of e-waste is formally collected and recycled. Africa, we have some work to do.

The gap is not that Africa generates more e-waste. Europe generates 17.6 kg of e-waste per person. Africa generates 2.5 kg. The gap is in what happens to our devices once they are retired.

✅ Closing that gap starts inside every organisation: retired devices going to a certified recycler, data destroyed on record and a paper trail that proves where every asset ended up.

The infrastructure exists. The standards exist. What matters now is choosing them.

How much e-waste has South Africa actually kept out of landfill? ♻️

According to South Africa's Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), almost 68,000 tonnes of e-waste had been diverted from landfill and recycled through Extended Producer Responsibility schemes as of October 2024, in the three years since the regulations came into effect.

That number only grows with certified, accountable disposal at every stage: from the producer registering under the scheme to the last device reaching a compliant recycler.

As our Heritage Month comes to an end, we're looking at where the next chapter of every retired device begins:

Before we had AI, we had Clippy. 📎

It used to pop up on Windows XP to lend a hand, whether you asked for it or not.

Fun fact: Its official name was Clippit. Microsoft brought it back in 2021 as an emoji after fans demanded its return on social media.

Technology got more complex since then. So did the responsibility of retiring it properly.

In the Cape Town metro alone, the e-waste generated each year is worth an estimated R36.5 million to R77.4 million. Whether that value is recovered responsibly comes down to where the equipment ends up.

Who still remembers what this is? 💾

Believe it or not, the 8-inch floppy disk was still coordinating the United States' nuclear launch messaging system until 2019. The hardware behind it dated back to the 1970s.

"I was looking for something that would challenge my mind.
