β„οΈπŸ’™ TAKE THE PLUNGE FOR A GREAT CAUSE! πŸ’™β„οΈ

There are few things that wake you up quite like an icy swim on a winter's morning – especially when it's all for helping others.

The Grahamstown Sunset Rotary Club invites you to celebrate the Winter Solstice with their annual Polar Plunge on:

πŸ“… Sunday, 21 June 2026
⏰ 07h00

⚠️ IMPORTANT: VENUE CHANGE ⚠️
πŸ“ St Andrew's Prep Swimming Pool, Leicester Street

Due to the recent heavy rains, the access road and part of the Grey Dam wall near the overflow weir have been severely eroded, creating safety concerns. While this means a change of venue, it certainly doesn't mean a change of spirit! The organisers are working closely with local authorities, and the event will still go ahead as a celebration of courage, community and kindness.

πŸŒ… Join friends, family and fellow brave souls as we welcome the shortest day of the year and symbolically step "into the light".

🧣 Bring along a blanket or gently worn warm clothing to donate to families in need and enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate afterwards. Every donation, no matter how small, will help bring warmth and comfort to someone this winter.

β˜• Hot chocolate for a blanket donation
β˜• Hot beverages after the swim
πŸš‘ Medical services will be available
🏊 Swim at your own risk

Whether you're diving in, cheering from the sidelines or simply dropping off a donation, your support will make a real difference. Let's show once again what a caring and generous community we are. πŸ’™

⚠️🚰 URGENT WATER OUTAGE NOTICE: Most Suburbs Will Be Without Water From Tonight Until Friday 🚰⚠️

As part of the ongoing Hudson Street Road Upgrade, Boldline Construction uncovered a section of aging underground water infrastructure beneath the roadway that is in poor condition and has been leaking for some time.

In an incredibly generous gesture, Ultra Liquors, who are already funding the Hudson Street road upgrade, have agreed to also fund the replacement of this section of water pipeline to help improve the area's infrastructure for years to come. πŸ‘

🚰 Why is the water being shut off?

Makana Water officials met with the project team on site today and confirmed that the existing isolation valves are no longer operational. Unfortunately, this means the water supply cannot be isolated to Hudson Street alone.

As a result, most suburbs in Makhanda will be affected by a water outage from sometime tonight until sometime on Friday while the emergency pipeline replacement is carried out.

At this stage, the exact times for the shutdown and restoration of the water supply have not yet been confirmed. The project team is hopeful that the work will be completed and the water restored by Friday afternoon, but this remains dependent on how the installation and testing progress.

πŸ”§ What work will be done?

A 100-metre section of the old water main running underneath Hudson Street will be replaced with a brand-new pipeline.

The work includes:
β€’ Excavating the existing pipeline.
β€’ Installing the new water main.
β€’ Fitting new isolation valves.
β€’ Reconnecting surrounding properties.
β€’ Testing the new installation before the water supply is fully restored.

Boldline Construction has already begun excavation work and all the necessary materials are on site and ready for installation.

πŸ™ We know this news comes at very short notice and that an extended water outage will be difficult for many residents, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities. While this additional work was unforeseen, replacing the damaged infrastructure now will help prevent further leaks and more serious disruptions in the future.

Thank you to everyone for your patience, understanding and cooperation while these essential upgrades are carried out.
