🧠 3 Questions Real Profilers Ask Before Making Any Judgment

Forget the Hollywood version real profiling isn't a snap decision.

It's disciplined, methodical thinking.

Before I ever draw a conclusion about someone's behavior, I ask myself:

1. Is this a baseline deviation, or just who they are?

Everyone has their own "normal." A single nervous gesture means nothing without context.

2. Could there be another explanation for this behavior?

Stress, fatigue, culture, and personality can all mimic deception. Jumping to conclusions is where amateurs go wrong.

3. Am I seeing a pattern, or just one moment in isolation?

One tell is an observation. A cluster of consistent signals is information.

Profiling isn't about "catching" people it's about understanding them accurately.

And that takes patience, training, and restraint.

🚩 5 Conversational Red Flags That May Signal a Lie

Ever get that gut feeling someone isn't being straight with you?

Here's what to actually listen for:

1️⃣ Over-explaining - Truthful answers are usually simple. Liars often add unnecessary details to sound convincing.

2️⃣ Delayed responses - A pause before answering a simple question can mean they're constructing a story, not recalling a memory.

3️⃣ Repeating the question back to you - "Did I take the money?" is a classic stalling tactic to buy thinking time.

4️⃣ Shifting pronouns - Distancing language like "that thing" instead of "your gift" can signal discomfort with the truth.

5️⃣ Defensive over-reaction - Genuine confusion looks different from rehearsed defensiveness.

Watch the gap between the accusation and the reaction.

⚠️ One red flag doesn't equal a lie - context and baseline behavior always matter.

That's the real skill of profiling: reading patterns, not single moments.

How Profilers Read a Room in 10 Seconds

Before a single word is spoken, a trained profiler is already collecting data.

In the first 10 seconds of entering a room, we're scanning for:

👀 Posture & positioning - who's leaning in, who's pulling back, who's positioned closest to the exit

🗣️ Group dynamics - who's talking, who's listening, who's being subtly excluded

😐 Facial baseline - how does each person normally look, before anything happens to shift it

🤝 Micro-clusters - who naturally gravitates toward whom, and who stands alone

⚡ Energy shifts - tension, discomfort, or forced ease that doesn't match the moment

It's not a superpower.

It's pattern recognition, trained over years to happen almost instantly.

The room is always talking - most people just aren't listening.

Polygraph Myths vs. Facts

Movies and TV have lied to you about lie detectors.
Let's set the record straight 👇

❌ Myth: A polygraph "detects lies."
✅ Fact: It doesn't detect lies at all it measures physiological responses (heart rate, breathing, skin conductivity). Deception is inferred from patterns, not proven directly.

❌ Myth: You can't beat a polygraph.
✅ Fact: Countermeasures exist, and results can be influenced by anxiety, medication, or even a skilled subject. That's why context and training matter so much.

❌ Myth: A "failed" polygraph means someone is guilty.
✅ Fact: Nervous, truthful people can show the same stress responses as someone lying. That's why results are treated as investigative tools not standalone proof.

❌ Myth: Polygraph results are 100% admissible and reliable in court.
✅ Fact: Admissibility varies by country and jurisdiction, and even where allowed, they're rarely used as the sole piece of evidence.
The truth?

A polygraph is a tool not magic, not infallible.

Its real value comes from the expertise of the examiner interpreting it.

What does a Forensic Psychophysiologist actually do?

It's a mouthful of a title so let's break it down.

I study the connection between the mind and the body's physiological responses (like heart rate, breathing, and skin conductivity) to help determine truth from deception.

In simple terms:
when you lie, your body often reacts even when your face doesn't.

My job is to scientifically measure and interpret those physiological signals, often using tools like the polygraph, combined with behavioral analysis and profiling techniques.

It's not mind-reading.
It's not magic.

It's the intersection of psychology, physiology, and forensic science used in criminal investigations, corporate due diligence, and personal consultations.

Think you can spot a lie?

Your face already knows the truth even when your mouth doesn't.

Micro-expressions are involuntary flashes of emotion that appear for a fraction of a second before we consciously mask them.

Reading these signals is part of how I assess truth, deception, and hidden emotion.

None of these alone "prove" deception because context and baseline behavior always matter.

But once you know what to look for, you'll never watch a conversation the same way again.

Save this for your next negotiation, interview, or first date.

Can regular polygraph testing actually change a business?

We've seen it firsthand.

We conduct periodic polygraph testing across multiple private game reserves in South Africa, largely to help combat rhino poaching from the inside.

And after years of doing this, we can say without a doubt, it works.

One client in particular stands out.

It's a reserve we've grown close to over the years and it genuinely feels like home when we arrive.

But it wasn't always that way.

When we first started testing there, a significant number of staff failed their first and second-phase polygraphs.

Following investigation, several were found to be directly involved in poaching activity and were removed from the reserve.

We kept coming back, year after year.

And every year, fewer people failed.

Today, when we run our annual testing across almost 300 staff members, if even 5 people fail, that's considered a lot.

That change didn't happen by chance.

It happened because a consistent, structured procedure was put in place and maintained.

This is proof that proactive screening isn't just a formality, it's a real deterrent.

You can't control what people do in their own time, but you can build a culture where integrity is expected and checked.

That alone can protect your business, your people, and in this case, an endangered species.

Facial features are genetic, sure, but personality isn't... right?

Here's an honest, personal take: They aren’t separate at all.

Take my own family.

We mostly share the same nose shape and similar facial features.

Funny enough, we're also all entrepreneurs, every single one of us.

I've noticed similar patterns in other families too.

Families share facial features, but also characteristics.

Now, I'm not claiming your face determines who you are or what you're capable of.

Correlation isn't causation, and there's likely a lot more at play (upbringing, environment, shared values) than facial structure alone.

It's an interesting pattern, but notice how "family resemblance" goes beyond just looks.

What patterns have you noticed in your own family?

For years, people kept asking me the same question: "So when are you finally writing that book?"

Honestly?

I dreaded it.
Every time, I'd picture some dry, clinical training manual, and I just couldn't see myself putting my name on that.

And then, a year ago, something clicked; What if I could share everything I've learned, in a way people would want to read?

And Dr. Raven McKay was created.

Why not walk with her, see what she thinks, and learn in the process.

She's fiction, but she's built on everything real: the deception detection, reading behind the masks, the years of forensic experience I've spent my career refining.

And now, finally, the first book is in the Dr. Raven McKay series is available. First copies available at our conference on July 30th, or available online.
