Spotlight on Kyla February: A Rising Star at Multi-Media
At Multi-Media, we celebrate individuals who embody resilience, ambition, and the drive to make an impact. Today, we shine the spotlight on Kyla February, whose journey with us has been nothing short of inspiring.
Kyla’s journey at Multi-Media began in 2022 when she joined the company as an intern technician. With a natural curiosity and a desire to be hands-on in the world of event production, she quickly fell in love with lighting and the technical side of the industry, she was recently recognised as one of the custodians of the Multi-Media values. Her name was found among a few in a raffle of team members who live, eat, and breathe our corporate values, and it so happened that she won a fully paid 7-day holiday to Mauritius. How amazing is that!
Her story with Muti-Media begins after matriculating and not really having an idea what to do next with her life… but then an opportunity arose to begin an Internship at Multi-Media. And that was the beginning of a love story between Kyla (the chaos coordinator) and Multi-Media.
Although intimidating at first, she quickly learnt the ropes and, after a few months, became an expert in “setting the tone” for our corporate events through sound and lighting. “I fell in love with lights,” she said with a glisten in her eyes. She describes that the part that she loves the most is “I get to express myself in a creative way”.
She later felt that she had figured out her career path, which was to eventually pivot into HR… this then required a shift in mindset, but also location… this required her to be more of an “office hun” vs a “site hun” to understand the administrative processes. This was a difficult decision for her to make, but she was aware of the
sacrifice she needed to make in the short term for her long-term career plan within this business. Kyla now works in the Cape Town branch in her current role as Operations Co-Ordinator.
She was grateful for the support she received from Multi-Media after knowing about her desire and enabled an environment that allowed her to pivot into her current path. Her exact words were “the company management was really supportive and pushed for it, they guided me in the transition”.
When asked what the biggest milestone in her career is to date, she mentions, “Just my whole career so far from being a technician to obviously pushing myself to do operations at such a young age. I am definitely proud of myself.”
In her original role as one of the few female technicians in a traditionally male-dominated industry, "Being a female technician was tough at times. People would assume I didn’t know what I was doing just because I was a girl. But I made sure I knew my stuff. Whether it was sound, AV, or lighting, I pushed myself to be excellent," she says.
Her hard work paid off. Within months, she was working on large-scale productions, high-pressure events, and major client projects.
But Kyla’s ambitions stretched beyond the technical realm. Transitioning from an on-site, creative role to an office-based, structured environment wasn’t easy. The new role came with a different kind of pressure—managing supplier relationships, handling logistics, coordinating freelancers, and ensuring projects were executed seamlessly.
Kyla continues to excel in operations, though her ambitions don’t stop there! She dreams of one day opening her own café on wheels, bringing her passion for baking to life. She also hopes to travel more, experience new cultures, and broaden her perspective.
As she gears up for an exciting trip to Mauritius later this year, a well-deserved reward for her dedication, we hope that this will be the beginning of a never-ending bucket list, and we couldn’t be prouder of her journey.
