Run a speed test, get a number, assume that number is the whole story. It is not quite that simple.

A speed test measures your connection at that exact moment, to that specific test server, over whatever path your device happens to be connected through (Wi-Fi or ethernet matters here). It does not account for time of day, which server you tested against, background downloads running quietly, or a dozen devices competing for the same Wi-Fi signal.

For an accurate read, test on ethernet where possible, close other apps first, and run it a few times across different times of day rather than trusting a single result.

A speed test is a useful snapshot but it is not the full picture.

Firmware updates. The setting sitting quietly in your router’s admin panel that almost nobody clicks on, and the one most likely to fix mystery slowdowns and random disconnects.

Router firmware is the software running the device itself, and manufacturers release updates for security patches, stability fixes, and performance improvements. Most routers do not update automatically. If yours has been running the same firmware since installation day, there is a reasonable chance an update has been sitting there for months.

Worth five minutes in your router’s settings to check. If you are not sure how to update it, your ISP’s support team can usually talk you through it.

If you sit on a body corporate or trustee committee, fibre contracts probably aren't your specialty, and that's exactly when it's easy to sign something that looks fine on the surface but locks the community into a bad deal.

A few questions worth asking before anyone signs anything:
Is this an exclusive agreement, or can residents still choose their own ISP?
What happens to existing infrastructure if you switch providers later?
Who's responsible for maintenance, the ISP or the network operator?
And critically, does this agreement affect residents' ability to choose their own provider down the line?

The package that was perfect two years ago might not be cutting it anymore, especially if anything's changed at home.

Worth checking is if more people working from home than when you signed up. A teenager who's started gaming or streaming in 4K. Video calls that never used to happen daily and now happen constantly. Smart home devices, security cameras, or extra streaming services added over time.

None of that is a problem with your ISP, it's just growth. And usually the fix is simple with a quick chat with your provider about stepping up a tier.

A 500Mbps package that drops out twice a week isn't actually faster than a 100Mbps package that never drops. Not in any way that matters day to day at least.

Most people compare two, maybe three ISPs before picking one and moving on. Fair enough, comparison shopping is tedious.
