My dad was a Morris dancer.

Hereford in the 80s. Bells, sticks, the green man, characters older than the church itself walking through the city on May Day.

I always wanted to dance around the Maypole.

I was too little.

I'm thinking about it today because it's May Day here in Adelaide and the leaves have turned red.

The sunshine has gone chilly.

Same date.
Opposite season.
Same direction in the calendar, opposite direction in the weather.

Two people doing exactly the same thing on exactly the same day, with completely different conditions running underneath.

Which is also the thing I keep noticing in my client work.

Two founders can run the same launch. Post the same content. Hire the same coach. Follow the same playbook.

Wildly different results.

The variable isn't the strategy.
It's the pattern running underneath.

You don't have a strategy problem.
You have a pattern problem.

Most people are using AI in a way that quietly replaces them.
There's another way — one where AI amplifies you instead of standing in for you. The full episode is on my YouTube channel (Selena Woodward Coaching) if you want the whole thinking.

I caught myself asking Claude whether my thinking was good enough.

Not for feedback on the structure.

For reassurance.
That was the episode I didn't plan to make.

It became the one I couldn't not make.Four weeks of AI content ended up being four weeks of noticing how easy it is to outsource the part of you that actually matters. The part AI can't do. The part that makes the work yours.

The complicated stuff? AI is genuinely brilliant at it.
The complex stuff — who you are, what you actually think, why it matters — only goes one direction.

80% you.
20% tool.

Not the other way around.

If you've been feeling more productive but not more potent lately, this series is for you.Ep 69-72 of the Inner Business Podcast 🎙️

A whiteboard marker. Not my laptop.

That's what I reached for when the idea for this week's episode landed.

I was building slides for the next Clarity Shift, running them through the lens of the 20 prime directives of the unconscious mind (yes, nerdy, NLP, can't help myself), when something sparked. A thread about sales copy I had to follow.

Five minutes in, the whiteboard was full. Then I opened Claude.
Not to write the episode. To push back on what I was thinking. To ask better questions. To let me hear what I already knew.

By the end, two episodes had emerged instead of one. Seven pages of notebook. Cat thoroughly dizzy watching me run back and forth. 🐈😵‍💫

This week on The Inner Business Podcast: the workflow I actually used.

The 80% that has to be you. The 20% AI is genuinely brilliant at. And what happens to your content when you flip the ratio.

Tuesday night I ran my Clarity Event. A room of women, naming the voices that run their businesses.

"Push harder."
"Prove your worth."
"Say yes to everything or they'll stop coming."

Four women. Four versions of the same pattern.

Yesterday, a client session. I pulled the Page of Swords and handed it to her. (Most people expect me to interpret it. I don't. The card is for her, not me.)

A story came up. Not one I'll share. But in the corner of the whiteboard, I wrote her four lines.

Feel the light.
Notice the dark.
Don't let it dim you.
Use it to learn to be brighter.

Then I stood back and realised I'd just written what I'd been trying to say to the room two nights before.

The voices aren't the enemy. The shadows aren't the problem to fix.

They're signals. A flag from your unconscious to say this is where you're ready to look now.

Most of us spend years trying to silence them.
What if you listened instead? 💭

I built the event. I brought Microsoft in. I pulled hundreds of teachers into the building.
And then I stood on the stage in my own company's t-shirt and gave a talk about something else.

A photo popped up in my memories this morning. I'm on stage at Flinders University wearing an Edufolios t-shirt. There's an Edufolios banner propped in the corner of the room. I'd snuck it there.

And I'm talking about the ICT general capability.

Not Edufolios. Not the company my husband and I had spent years building. Not the platform thousands of Australian teachers were using at that point.

The ICT general capability.

I never planned to talk about Edufolios. I'd written the safer talk. Prepared the safer talk. Walked into that room with the safer talk already chosen, days before I stood up.

I spent a long time telling myself I'd been respectful of the room. Flinders' name was on the event, so it wouldn't have been appropriate to talk too loudly about the thing I'd built.
It wasn't true.

Flinders had been claiming me as part of their innovation ecosystem for months. Every award, every national shortlist, every competition. They were delighted to be associated with what I was building. Loudly and in public.

And I'd decided, quietly and in advance, that it would be inappropriate to say my own company's name out loud.

That's not respect. That's something else.

Here's what I can see now that I couldn't then. The person I was protecting myself from wasn't Flinders. It was me. Specifically the version of me who could stand in front of a room full of teachers and be the founder in the room instead of one of them. These were my people. I'd been a teacher. And letting myself be the one with something to sell them, even something I'd built for them, meant shifting out of a tribe I still belonged to in my own head.

So I picked the identity that felt safer, and I made up a story about why that was noble.
If you're standing on the seam between who you were and who you're becoming, which identity have you been quietly protecting?

Because she wasn't protecting anyone. She was postponing a decision about who she was actually becoming.

I'm wearing a Star Trek jacket to explain your business problems. Stick with me. (Any excuse.)

The Prime Directive in Star Trek is the rule that stops the Federation interfering with developing civilisations. One rule. Keeps everyone safe.

Your unconscious mind has twenty of them.

Twenty rules running in the background of every decision you make. What you charge. Who you say yes to. What you avoid. The thing you keep meaning to launch and somehow don't.

They're not there to sabotage you. They're there to keep you safe until you're ready to see what's actually going on. The mind wants to resolve the pattern. It just won't hand it to you before you can hold it.

Your mind isn't holding you back. It's waiting for you.

Your business is one of the loudest places those patterns show up.

Tonight in The Clarity Shift I'm walking you through what they are and where to look for them in your business. Bring a notebook. It gets good.

She bought the course on viral videos.

Watched every module. Took the notes. Never posted a single one.
That's not a strategy problem.

It's the 80% underneath the strategy quietly running the show. The story you're telling yourself about why it's not the right time yet. The pattern that kicks in every time you're about to be visible.

None of that shows up in your funnel metrics. But it's making every decision you think you're making rationally.

This Tuesday I'm running The Clarity Shift — a free live session where we stop trying to fix the strategy and start looking at the layer underneath it.

No replay. Live only. 7pm Adelaide, 21st April.

If something has felt off despite the effort, this is the room.

The people who get the most out of AI over the next 12 months won't have better tools than you.

They'll have done something you probably haven't been told to do yet.

AI can handle the complicated. The patterns, the structure, the algorithms.

But it can't do the complex. That part only comes from you.

Your stories. Your wisdom. Your emotional truth. The things that make your business yours and not a template.

Hand AI the complicated without bringing the complex first and you get back the average of everyone who came before you.

Bring the complex first and suddenly the complicated actually works.

That's the difference. And it's got nothing to do with which tool you're using.

I opened a chat window and typed: "Help me write my content strategy."

It did. Perfectly structured. Completely generic. Missing me entirely.

That's when I realised I'd handed it a 20-minute Macbeth draft.

When I was an English teacher, my Year 9s used to hand up essays written the night before. I always knew. And the feedback I could give them on those drafts was limited to stuff they already knew. They hadn't gone deeper first, so I couldn't take them anywhere new.

The students who got the most out of my feedback showed up with their real attempt. Messy. Honest. Actually theirs. Then I could take them somewhere.

AI works exactly the same way.

Hand it a half-hearted brief and it gives you back the average of everyone who came before you. Competent. Tidy. Completely devoid of you.

But show up with your actual thinking first. The messy version. The "I don't know if this is right but here's what I actually believe" version.

Then it can do what good feedback does. Take you somewhere you couldn't get to alone.

Lead on, Macduff!
