July marks the heart of pruning season at Bellbrae Estate.

Throughout June and July, we're hand pruning three of our vineyard blocks: our Front Yard vineyard (planted in 1999, 0.5ha), our Old Vineyard (planted in 1999, 3ha), and our Young Vineyard (planted in 2015, 3ha).

Every vine is pruned using the ancient Poussard method, a technique that follows the vine's natural sap flow while carefully shaping its structure for the season ahead. It's a slower, thoughtful approach that promotes long-term vine health and longevity.

After a very dry start to the year, June brought a welcome 120mm of rain, replenishing the soil profile and ensuring any future rainfall can now flow into our dam. July has been much drier, with 22mm so far, but the extra sunshine has given us more time to focus on pruning.

Our goal this season is to produce around 2kg of fruit per vine, or approximately 5 tonnes per hectare. Given our limestone-rich soils and moderate natural fertility, we believe this is the ideal balance to produce concentrated, high-quality fruit.

This year we've also made an exciting change in our Young Vineyard. For the first time, the upper and middle sections have been pruned using a unilateral system, leaving a single fruiting cane wrapped uphill along the wire. With the limestone sitting just beneath the surface, strong coastal winds, and vines that are still only 11 years old, we believe this approach will encourage stronger shoot growth and more intensely flavoured fruit than the traditional two-cane system.

Every season teaches us something new, and we're always adapting our vineyard practices to suit our unique site.

Our newly released Tétaz range, specifically the Pinot Noir, has already achieved a 96 point Halliday review.

"Hand picked from Bellbrae's 26-year-old, MV6 clone-planted vineyard. 30% whole bunches. A bright, medium garnet. A delicate and nuanced bouquet of wild strawberry, rose petals, and sweet spice, with a little sous bois starting to emerge. This all follows through onto the palate, which is medium bodied, very even and with gently chewy yet fine-grained tannins. It's singing today and, I imagine, will still be looming good for four to six years from now."
