📱 These are the sorts of messages I love getting from clients.

One is sharing how they're spending some time winding down outside the business. The other is having a bit of a vent about something that's gone wrong at work. I'm happy to hear both!

💸 Having $10,000 in the bank does not always mean you have $10,000 to spend.

You might want new equipment. The money looks like it’s there. Then BAS turns up and suddenly that “spare” money was never spare at all.

This is why we separate money.

GST has its place. Tax has its place. Spending money has its place. The owner can see what’s actually available without accidentally using money that was meant for something else.

Then we can talk about the fun part too.

What else could the business do?
What new revenue ideas make sense?
Where can we build a bit more buffer?

No emails, meetings, or stress. Now’s time for sleep, snacks and judging everyone from the couch.

🥩🤮 Once I found meat sitting in the boot of a kitchen staff member’s car instead of the restaurant cool room.

I’ve found goods received were not being checked properly and it was losing them money. Wrong items, missing quantities, credits not followed up, stock put in the wrong place.

If you ordered 10 and received 8, someone needs to know.

If the quality is poor, someone needs to push back.

If the invoice doesn’t match what you got, someone needs to check it before you pay.

No one can be everywhere at once. Deliveries might arrive when you are offsite, on the floor, dealing with staff, serving customers or putting out another fire. So the system has to work when you are not standing there.

Who checks the delivery? Who signs for it? Who compares it to the order? Who puts it away? Who chases the credit? Who notices if something keeps going wrong?

If your food costs are creeping up and you are not sure why, start with the basics. Deliveries, storage, wastage, portion control and stock movement.

The leak might be happening before the food even gets cooked.

😮‍💨💰 A busy week in the cafe can still end with no cash left and this drives the owners mad.

The sales were there and the team was flat out. Then wages, suppliers, rent, stock, tax and all the other bills take their turn. By the time you look again, there is not much left for you.
