Word Factory Principal Suzy Grinter has been fascinated by words throughout her life, her writing career taking off at the tender age of 20, when she

found herself in the somewhat enviable position of Group Public Relations Officer for a renowned international brewery based in the UK. Over the years Suzy has lived in Africa, France and the United Arab Emirates, the latter for over seven years, most of which time whilst working in a demanding position with British Petroleum, she wrote copious feature articles for the Gulf News and the Gulf Weekly magazine, and Emirates News. Concurrently, as a volunteer for the Red Crescent Society, and founder of the Abu Dhabi Environment Group, working closely with federal government ministers, members of the Royal Family and Abu Dhabi Municipality, she also produced innumerable media releases and articles for both the National (English-speaking) newspapers, and was a special guest on the ABC Radio ‘Desert Island Discs’ program. Suzy also undertook many public speaking engagements, particularly in the Middle East, and is no stranger to all forms of media, including television. Returning to Cairns, where she first came to live in 1979, Suzy took back the reins of Marlin Coast Secretarial Service, which she established with Myles Thompson, Lawyer, in the early Eighties. Marlin Coast Secretarial Service was rebranded Word Factory in 1998, to better reflect the diversity of creative writing projects undertaken by the business. More recently, Suzy put Word Factory on the slow burner for three years after being headhunted to work for previous Member for Barron River, Michael Trout, as Media Advisor and Electorate Officer, with previous early career experience working as Media Advisor to the then Federal Minister for Science and Technology and Member for Leichhardt David Thomson. Over 30 years on, Word Factory has never looked better, servicing clients from all over Australia and overseas.

The start of my daily conversation with AI on the subject of it taking my work away.. And why it doesn't work...
"Yes, AI has a tendency to use what I think of as the American approach, writing in the third person.
I think you've put your finger on a genuine stylistic difference.
In Australia, particularly in the industries you work with, there's a long tradition of résumés either being written in an implied first person ("Operated...", "Managed...", "Delivered...") or in a voice that clearly reflects the applicant. Even when there are no "I" statements, the document is still meant to sound as though the applicant could stand behind every word.
A lot of AI-generated résumés, by contrast, drift into a more detached style:
John is a highly motivated professional who demonstrates exceptional leadership capabilities...
or
Seasoned professional with a proven track record of...
That can feel like someone else is talking about the applicant rather than the applicant presenting themselves.
Your approach is much closer to what I've seen successful Australian résumé writers do. You interview the client, draw out their experiences, and then write in a voice that reflects them. Even if the résumé isn't literally first person, the wording is grounded in what they have told you."

Today I wrote to the Manager of Woolworths at Redlynch Central Shopping Centre with a reference for a young lad working at the checkout. It was a month ago, but I went there yesterday to check he was still employed there, as his service was impeccable. In my letter, I couldn't resist offering him a free resume at such a time as he might need one in the future. It is so refreshing to come across a very friendly, polite, customer service assistant with a lovely energy, and a natural customer service attitude rather than mumbling "Have a nice day" as if they were robots. Please do consider sending a note to store managers if you receive good service from a young assistant. It really helps them when they launch a career path.
