Crystal Origins Blue Lace Agate
Blue Lace Agate is a pale blue variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz (SiO₂). Its soft blue-and-white bands create the stone’s signature lace-like pattern.
What it’s made of
Its tightly packed silica crystals may contain traces of copper, manganese, or iron. Tiny inclusions can also affect its colour. The stone has a waxy to glassy shine when polished, a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, and a specific gravity of about 2.6.
How it forms
Blue Lace Agate develops when silica-rich fluids fill cavities in volcanic rocks such as basalt or dolerite. Over millions of years, layers of silica and trace minerals build its delicate bands. Some pieces also contain tiny quartz crystals, calcite, gypsum, or clay.
Where it’s found
Most high-quality material has come from the Ysterputs Mine in southern Namibia. It is also found in South Africa, Kenya, Turkey, Madagascar, Brazil, Malawi, Zambia, and parts of the United States.
Colour and banding vary with local rocks, minerals, and formation conditions.
Why it’s valued
Collectors love its unique pattern, and its durability makes it a great choice for cabochons, beads, and decorative carvings.
