With the release of the 2027 Halliday Wine Companion, Penley Estate has maintained its 5 Red Star winery rating continuously for a decade – recognition of a long track record of excellence and consistency.

It’s an achievement that also reflects the vision and talent of winemaker Kate Goodman, whose fresh, contemporary approach to Coonawarra has helped shape Penley and its wines since she joined us in 2016.

Our 2022 Helios Cabernet Sauvignon was also awarded 97 Points and named in Halliday's Top 100 Wines in 2025, further recognition of Kate, the Penley team and the exceptional fruit we’re fortunate to work with.

Kate is pictured here working in the Coonawarra yesterday. A decade of accolades – including being named the 2024 Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker of the Year – hasn’t changed the most important thing – she still loves making wine.

Join Penley winemaker Kate Goodman for one of Coonawarra’s most entertaining long lunches – Sips in the Sticks 2026 – this Sunday at Bellwether Wines, Coonawarra 🍷

This year’s theme is ‘Surviving and Thriving’, bringing together some of South Australia’s leading winemakers for an afternoon of great wine, multiple courses, stories and plenty of laughs at Bellwether’s Glen Roy Shearing Shed.

And then there’s the serious business: Dessert!

In a much-loved Sips in the Sticks tradition, each winemaker swaps the cellar for the kitchen and puts their dessert-making skills before the judges, competing for the coveted Kate Spencer perpetual trophy – a wonderful Trevor Smith crocheted tea cosy.

Kate will be representing Penley alongside Corrina Wright (Oliver's Taranga), Guy Parkinson (Skillogalee), Dave Bowley (Vinteloper), Charlotte Hardy (Charlotte Dalton Wines) and of course Sue Bell and the Bellwether crew, with chefs Clare Falzon of Staguni and Ian Perry of Red Shack Café serving up something special throughout the afternoon.

37 years. 16,000 kilometres. Still going strong. 🍷

We recently received a wonderful note from Danny on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where he’d just opened a bottle of our 1989 Penley Prestige Blend Shiraz Cabernet.

One of Penley’s earliest vintages. Bought from a local wine merchant for the unbelievable price of £45. And, nearly four decades after it was made, still drinking beautifully.

“What surprised me most was how alive it still was… remarkable freshness and energy.”

Not bad for an old bottle that’s travelled a very long way.

"I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a 37-year-old Australian wine, but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable bottles I've had in a long time."

Penley wines are made to go the distance. This one certainly did.

🍷🍽️✨ Poured. Paired. Shared.

The Penley + Paxton Wines Wine Dinner, held at The Caledonian Hotel, North Adelaide on Wednesday 20th May, was a memorable evening of food, wine and conversation. Hosted by our award-winning winemaker Kate Goodman, the night also featured contributions from Paxton Wines founder and legendary viticulturist David Paxton, along with Sales and Marketing Manager for both wineries, Brian Lamb.

It was a journey through the unique characteristics of two distinct wine regions. Guests were treated to current and new release Penley Coonawarra wines alongside a selection of Paxton McLaren Vale wines, thoughtfully paired across five delicious courses.

Thanks to the chefs and staff at The Caledonian for fabulous food and hospitality, and to Belle from Nelson Wine Company. for helping make it happen.

We look forward to sharing more Penley food and wine experiences across Australia in the near future.
