Join our Head of Asian Art, Luke Guan, as he explores highlights from our June Important Chinese & Asian Art Collection, including this rare Tang Dynasty (618–907) sancai camel and female rider. The piece depicts a Han Chinese woman disguised as a man, possibly travelling along the Silk Road, during the height of one of the most prosperous and powerful empires in history. Adding to its rarity is the use of blue pigment, a precious material imported from Central Asia at the time and reserved for only the finest works.

17th century artistry meets 19th century French design in this important pair of cabinets by Hippolyte-Edme Prétot (1812-1855)⚜️✨

At the heart of our June Collector’s Auction is a Private Queensland Collection (lots 80-130), featuring an important pair of Napoleon III ebonised cabinets. These cabinets are exceptional not only for their scale and elegance but also for their incorporation of earlier Louis XIV carved ebony panels, executed in the manner of celebrated court ébéniste Pierre Gole. This re-appreciation of the furniture of earlier periods and the re-use of elements of them in the furniture of the first half of the 19th century was a hallmark of quality craftmanship of this period.

In this issue, we are thrilled to share Dr Rosalind Hollinrake’s first-hand account of her discovery of the works of Clarice Beckett, now regarded as one of Australia’s most important painters, but at one time almost entirely forgotten. We also discover funerary masks from Ancient Egypt, take a look inside Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ jewellery box, learn about the intricate art of netsuke carving with Leigh Sloggett, and examine three intriguing chair designs created with the intention of being, at least in part, deliberately uncomfortable.
We also take a closer look at mesmerising emeralds, fan-shaped paintings, and the porcelain paintings of Harry Davis for Royal Worcester.
So, take a (comfortable!) seat, and enjoy these stories and many more from our specialists and guest contributors.
