The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed the next invitation round for the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) on 4 June 2026.
What is the Subclass 189?

A permanent residency visa for skilled workers without employer or family sponsorship. You must have an eligible occupation and an active EOI in SkillSelect.

What to do before June 4:
✅ Ensure your EOI is submitted and up to date
✅ Confirm your occupation is on the eligible list
✅ Maximise and verify your points score
✅ Check your skills assessment hasn't expired
✅ Make sure all your details are accurate

Who gets invited?
Invitations go to the highest-scoring candidates per occupation. If your EOI isn't current or competitive, you won't be invited — even if you qualify.

If your partner is an Australian citizen or PR holder, the pathway exists — but it takes time, and it takes
evidence.

The partner visa (820/801 or 309/100) is a two-stage process. Stage 1 is temporary, Stage 2 is
permanent. Processing times are long, and most people know that going in.

What most people don't know is this:
The majority of delays and refusals aren't caused by relationship issues.
They're caused by weak evidence files.

Home Affairs needs to be satisfied that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. That means:

→ Photos across time and locations — not just one trip
→ Communication records: call logs, messages, video history
→ Joint finances: shared accounts, leases, insurance policies
→ Statutory declarations from people who know you as a couple
→ Evidence of mutual knowledge of each other's family and background

Starting with a thin file is the single biggest reason partner visa cases stall.

There are also three different partner visa subclasses (300, 309, 820) — each applying to different
circumstances. Don't guess which one fits your situation.
