McKinley Plowman and MP Financial Planning is a firm of Accountants, financial planners and finance brokers that is dedicated to supporting our clients’ goals. Our accounting, financial planning and finance broking divisions provide the expertise and resources of large city based firms, while offering the competitive fee structure and personal service of a suburban practice. We have expanded considerably since opening our doors in 1997 – a time when kangaroos were still bounding their way around what is now Joondalup’s thriving business district. Our team is now located within two offices in Perth - Joondalup and Victoria Park. We started our practice with goals of providing exceptional client service, providing an enjoyable place to work and becoming an employer of choice. A great testimony to our success in achieving these goals is the many client generated referrals that have helped us become one of Perth’s biggest suburban based accounting companies. McKinley Plowman retains the energy of a young company, yet at the same time our team collectively offers many decades of local, national and international expertise in their respective fields. Having grown from a two man company we understand the challenges of setting up a business. We are grounded in our advice, yet, at the same time, we are passionately focused on acting as an advisory partner that gets our clients to their goals. We greatly value our clients and are committed to honouring the trust they place in us by creating visible results for them. Financial planning services provided by MP Financial Planning Pty Ltd. 🤷 Does sounding more professional sometimes make businesses harder to understand?

➕ More detail in the proposal. More information on the website. More slides in the presentation. More explanation in the email. The intention is usually good. But there comes a point where more information stops being helpful and starts creating friction.

🗞️ In our latest article, MP+ Head of Marketing & Communications Ben Hart looks at the cost of complexity in business communication, and why making things easier to understand can improve the experience you provide to clients and prospective customers.

⏰ You've forgotten to lodge on time, surely the ATO won't notice. Or you've started to accumulate a debt with the ATO, but that can wait until cash flow improves before you pay that one off. Director penalties are rare, so you don't need to stress.

📬 Over 84,000 Director Penalty Notices were issued in the 2025 financial year, triple the previous year. Over 59,000 of those notices were issued within just 9 months them being raised, mostly targeting unpaid tax debt. The debt the ATO is currently sniffing out exceeds $100 billion, with a very active recovery taskforce backing it.

Don't fall behind on your lodgements and payment obligations ➡️ https://bit.ly/4ypLdmj

🏠 WA’s property market continues to evolve, and the picture in September is becoming increasingly nuanced.

📊 While Perth remains relatively resilient, buyers have more opportunity to compare properties and undertake due diligence than during the intense conditions of recent years. At the same time, prices and rents remain high, while Perth’s industrial market continues to experience tight supply.

In our latest WA Property Market Update, Finance Director Paul Moran looks at what the latest residential and industrial market data could mean for buyers, investors and business owners, particularly when it comes to financing their next move.

😖 Without a clear structure, wealth to be passed on can be lost or mismanaged. Family assets may be exposed to creditors, relationships may experience breakdowns, or beneficiaries may receive a significant amount of wealth who aren't ready to manage it. Lack of planning can create uncertainty, disputes, and unintended outcomes.

🔒 Trusts are there to provide control over how, when, and to whom wealth is distributed. Assets can be protected while still supporting long-term family goals, values, and its legacy. Trusts can fund education, support philanthropic ventures, and create a structured roadmap for where future wealth is directed. Tailored Wills and Trusts help to ensure personal and business interests have smooth transitioned and are in accordance with your wishes.

💭What does a comfortable retirement look like, and how much does it cost?

The latest ASFA Retirement Standard estimates that a single homeowner aged 65 to 84 needs $56,166 per year for a comfortable retirement, while a home-owning couple needs $78,998. These benchmarks can be a useful starting point, but they don't tell the whole story.

🏡 Your retirement budget may depend on everything from housing and healthcare to travel, hobbies, family commitments and the age at which you retire.

📰 In our latest article, Financial Planning Director Aaron McCracken explores the cost of a comfortable retirement in Australia and how to turn broad retirement benchmarks into a plan based on the lifestyle you actually want 👉 https://bit.ly/4hr8gWJ

📉 Lack of preparation when selling a business can cost you. Operational inefficiencies, poor financial reporting, unresolved debt, and outdated systems can raise red flags for buyers and reduce business value. The longer these issues remain, the greater the risk of lower offers and a slower sale

✅ A thorough review before making steps to start selling helps to identify issues before they become major obstacles. Modern systems, strong financial reporting, and proactive debt management increase buyer confidence, streamline the sale process, and strengthen business appeal.

Preparation creates value ➡️ https://bit.ly/4xkAhFk

🪜 Australia’s proposed 30% minimum tax on certain discretionary trusts has taken another step forward.

Treasury has released exposure draft legislation providing greater detail on how the proposed rules could operate from 1 July 2028 — including a significant new option for eligible discretionary trusts: the Excluded Election Trust (EET) regime.

🌟 In the latest instalment of our Budget Progress Report, Dean Birch, Head of Tax at McKinley Plowman, looks at:

• what has changed since the original Budget announcement
• how the proposed EET regime could work
• what the changes could mean for discretionary trusts and corporate beneficiaries
• what remains subject to consultation and legislation
• what trust owners can be considering now.

While there is no need to make immediate structural changes, the exposure draft provides considerably more information for business owners and families to start assessing how the reforms could affect their existing arrangements.
