New business? Here's when to give us a call. 👋

We've welcomed a lot of new businesses this year. The question we hear most is "when do I actually need to talk to my accountant?"

Three good times:

1️⃣ Your sales are getting close to $6,000 a month. That's usually the sign you're nearing the $75,000 GST threshold.

2️⃣ You're about to put on your first staff member. Payroll, super and workers' comp all need setting up properly.

3️⃣ You're about to buy something big. How you buy it matters at tax time.

Christmas is lovely. The cash flow around it, less so. 🎄

Here's how it usually goes. Customers slow down paying in December. Work stops over the break. In January the work starts again, but it's a few weeks before the job is done and a few more before the money lands.

For a lot of businesses, that's six to eight weeks of bills with not much coming in.

A few things that help:

- Set your GST aside as it comes in. It's not spending money.
- Get December invoices out early and chase anything overdue now.
- Plan for wages, super, rent and your next BAS before you plan the Christmas party.
- Put a little aside each week between now and then.

Still adding a card surcharge? Time to check. 💳

Since 1 October, businesses can't add a surcharge when customers pay with Visa, Mastercard or eftpos. That covers debit, credit and prepaid cards, including tap-and-go with your phone.

Plenty of payment systems switched surcharges off automatically. Some didn't. And even when it's off, the cost hasn't gone away. It's now coming out of your margin.

Three things to check this week:

1️⃣ Your terminal, online checkout and invoicing software aren't still adding a fee.

2️⃣ Your prices now cover your card fees.

3️⃣ You're on a good deal. Bank fees on cards have been capped, so it's worth asking your provider or shopping around.

One more for the diary: the ATO stops taking credit card payments after 30 June 2027. If you pay your tax or a payment plan by credit card, you'll need a new way to pay.
