Here’s another useful grant insight from Kerry Phillips when she joined me for my Global Grant Day event.

Your organisation may have a strong track record, but have you actually explained why that experience matters to the grant you’re applying for now?

Kerry made the point that when your previous experience isn’t an exact match, you need to help the funder understand how it translates.

That might be through the skills of your team, similar projects you’ve delivered, outcomes you’ve achieved, or experience that shows you can manage a project of this size and complexity.

It’s easy to assume the connection is obvious because you know your organisation so well.

The assessor doesn’t have that same background.
So when you’re writing about your experience, don’t just list what you’ve done. Show the funder why that experience gives you the capability to deliver this project.

Do you have a capability gap in your grant application?
You don’t need to have every piece of expertise sitting inside your organisation to show that you can deliver a good project.

One of the points I made at my Global Grant Day event was that if there’s a gap in your team’s expertise, you need to recognise it and explain how you’ll fill it.

That might mean bringing in a specialist, working with a partner organisation or engaging someone with the experience the project needs.

What you don’t want is to leave the funder wondering whether you’ve noticed the gap at all.

When you’re reviewing your next application, look at the people and skills needed to deliver the project. Do you have them? If not, have you clearly explained how you’ll bring that capability into the project?

Another useful takeaway from Global Grant Day came from David Smith, when we started talking about what happens after you win the grant.

David described acquittal as a process, not simply a report. That distinction matters.

If you only start thinking about acquittal when the due date is close, you may be trying to find evidence, check expenditure and remember what happened months earlier.

If you think about it from the start, you can decide what needs to be recorded, who will collect the information and how you will track the grant while the project is running.

So when your next funding agreement arrives, don’t just put the reporting date in the calendar.

Look at what you will eventually need to demonstrate, then set yourself up to collect it as you go.

A little preparation at the beginning can make the end of the grant much less painful.

One of the insights that stood out from Global Grant Day last week was the importance of one word: achievable.

During the conversation about what gives a funder confidence in an organisation, guest speaker Kerry Phillips said:

“The most important piece of any grant application is that clear and achievable vision, and the word achievable is so important here.”

It’s an important distinction. Grant applications naturally spend a lot of time explaining the vision, what the organisation wants to do, why it matters, who it will help and what will change.

But the funder is also looking at the organisation behind that vision and asking whether they believe it can actually deliver what it is promising.

Have you shown that you have the right people and experience? Is there appropriate oversight? Do you have the systems to manage the funding and the evidence to demonstrate that you can deliver?

Sometimes strengthening a grant application isn’t about making the project sound more impressive. It might simply be about giving the funder greater confidence that what you’re proposing is achievable.

Next time you’re reviewing a grant application, have another read through it from the funder’s perspective. Have you actually shown them that your organisation can do what it’s promising?
