The 1936 RACQ High-Speed Reliability Trial at Woody Point was a historic motorsport event held on Saturday afternoon, 3 August 1936. Managed by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ), this unique street race transformed the public roads of the Redcliffe Peninsula into a challenging, high-speed test circuit.
Drivers raced along a 2.65-mile (approx. 4.26 km) street circuit through Woody Point and stretched up to Margate.
Oxley Avenue served as the main straightaway, noted at the time as the longest straight on the RACQ circuit.
Competitors pushed their vintage vehicles to the limits across 27 grueling laps, totaling just over 71 miles.
Officially designated as a "High-Speed Regularity and Reliability Trial," the team-based event tested consistent speed, driver stamina, and mechanical endurance rather than a simple sprint to the finish line.
The event drew roughly 30 expert drivers of the era, cementing Woody Point's place in early Australian motorsport folklore. To this day, local historians and vintage car clubs—such as the MG Car Club—regularly organize anniversary parades to retrace the original 1936 track layout.

A recently restored photos from 1915 showing Ipswich photographers visiting Humpybong. Local photographer George Mewes (second left) and his sister Edith ( 3rd left) Dr Lichtoller from Ipswich Camera club is pictured 4th from right.
The original photo is from George Mewe's rare 1966 book "All In One Camera Mans Lifetime"
George Mewes (1888–1975) was a foundational local photographer for the Moreton Bay area and he meticulously documented early life in Redcliffe, Wooloowin, and surrounding Brisbane suburbs. His legacy is preserved through the Redcliffe Museum Photographic Collection and travelled around in his early series motobike with his sister Edith.
Before his passing, he published a book of his works titled "All in One Cameraman's Lifetime" and donated his extensive vintage camera collection to local history preservation.
Edith Mewes: George's sister was a photographer in her own right. She frequently worked alongside her brother, taking portraits of him during their outings at locations like Scotts Point and Woody Point and appears in many of Georges photos in his motorbike's sidecar.
Dr Lichtoller: The Ipswich Camera Club was known for its highly educated and prominent members who picked up photography as a passionate pursuit. Doctors and professionals of the era were often the ones who could afford the complex chemistry and heavy glass-plate camera equipment required for field photography.
