One of the easiest ways to accidentally build dependency into your team?
Promote a great employee and assume they'll automatically become a great leader.

We see this all the time... someone is brilliant at their job, understands the business, cares deeply and has earned the promotion.

Suddenly, they're managing the same people they were sitting beside last week.
The title changed, and nobody helped them change with it.

They still identify as the person who gets things done, so they jump in instead of delegating. Difficult conversations feel uncomfortable because yesterday these people were colleagues. Decisions get escalated upwards because they're still learning to trust their own authority.

Eventually, the new manager becomes overloaded, and senior leadership wonders why they still can't let go.

If that rings true, just know there's a better way.

The pendulum of public opinion when it comes to AI has always been prone to extreme swings. Might it have swung a little too far?

We seem to have moved from AI obsession to AI fatigue to AI judgement remarkably quickly in the last few months.
Now, it seems that even a whiff of AI in our content can be enough for a business, a piece of content or even the thinking behind it to be dismissed as “AI slop”.

We don’t dismiss photographers for using Photoshop, do we? We have accepted it as part of their toolkit.

One of the hardest things about Systemising a business has nothing to do with processes or tech: it’s letting go.

Leaders wrangle these questions:
“What if they don’t care as much as I do?”
“What if they can’t do it without me?”
“What if I lose visibility?”

All understandable fears. I had them too.
As leaders, we can become so intertwined with our businesses that our identity (and yes, our EGO) gets wrapped up in being needed.
We become the person with the answers. The fixer. The safety net. The hero.
Then we wonder why ownership never moves beyond us.

Building strong Business Systems requires something from the leader first: the willingness to change too.: to transfer knowledge, give people authority, create visibility without hovering (micromanagers anyone?) and let others make decisions, learn, and eventually improve the Systems they own.

The ultmate goal in business - we believe - is to build other leaders who can own outcomes without you. That’s when you’re no longer the centre of the System. You’re building something bigger than yourself.

I thought being indispensable made me valuable. Turns out, I was wrong.

Apparently.

What does that even mean?

This is the problem with a lot of AI advice.

It sounds impressive and gives you almost nothing to use.

Business owners don’t need another wall of polished nonsense.

They need practical answers:
• What problem are we solving?
• What process needs to improve?
• What data can we trust?
• What decision gets easier?
• What risk goes down?

That’s the conversation worth having.
