What does Country mean to you?

Our Country and Culture team asked Pymble Ladies College students this very question yesterday at the Pymble Pathways Expo on Cammeraygal Country.
Here is what they had to say. 🫶

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the heritage-listed McIver’s Ladies Baths in Coogee in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Dharawal land. 🦀

Artefact was engaged by the Randwick & Coogee Ladies Swimming Association Inc to prepare a Statement of Heritage Impact for some proposed works to celebrate this historical milestone.

The McIver’s Ladies Baths have rich cultural significance as a seaside sanctuary for generations of local women. Originally used a bathing place by local Aboriginal women, followed by early female colonists from the 1830s, this natural sheltered rock pool was officially gazetted as the Ladies Baths by the Governor in 1876, providing a private haven for women to swim which continues to this day.  🏊‍♀️

Works to celebrate the site’s rich heritage are planned such as local artists’ murals on the Sunroom walls and photographs in the change rooms.  To find out more visit mciversladiesbaths.com.au

Our Heritage Consultant Sasha Douglas shares her reflections on the project.

This post is the first in a series of heritage projects we’ll share with you over coming weeks in celebration of the ’s Australian

Heritage flows through our daily lives shaping how we see the world and inspiring our actions.

Heritage goes beyond artefacts, buildings, shipwrecks and objects of the past to encompass the intangible – songlines, recipes, stories, language and our sense of place.

While stemming from the past, Heritage is vibrant, meaningful and innately relevant to the present.

How is heritage influencing your life today?

Happy World Heritage Day! 🎊

What are your plans for the Easter long weekend? 🐇
Here’s some pics of what people would get up to in Sydney on the Easter weekend from the early 1900s, courtesy of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Collection.

First held in 1823, the Sydney Royal Easter Show has long been the place to be at this time of year. Originally held as an agricultural show in Parramatta Park, the Show then moved to Moore Park and later to Sydney Olympic Park where this iconic event continues to be held to this day.

Wishing you a historic Easter long weekend! 😊

Lakkari Traditional Owner Robert Yettica has fond memories from his childhood of Wallis Island – a nature reserve on NSW’s mid north coast (near Forster-Tuncurry) on Worimi and Burpai Country. With strong ties to the land, Robert believes it’s important that the cultural material on the island is preserved out of respect to both his ancestors and future generations.
A new jetty is planned for Wallis Island which will provide greater access to the Island for the community to care for Country.

Artefact was engaged by NSW Crown Lands to undertake archaeological salvage excavations to ensure any Aboriginal cultural artefacts at the site are protected.

The Artefact team worked closely with the Lakkari Traditional Owners Corporation throughout the excavation.

Some shell and stone artefacts were salvaged at the site. Under the guidance of the traditional owners, the salvaged artefacts were wrapped in paperbark (from one of the trees on the island) and reburied at the base of a tall Banksia tree, also known as the Lakkari tree – returning these important Aboriginal objects of times past to the land.
