Vehicle allowance increase for SCHADS and aged care employers

A quick payroll update for employers covered by the SCHADS Award or Aged Care Award.

From the first full pay period starting on or after 1 September 2026, the vehicle allowance increases from $1.01 to $1.05 per kilometre.

The allowance applies when an employee is required and authorised to use their own vehicle in the course of their duties. This can include travelling between clients or work locations, but does not generally include the employee’s ordinary trip between home and work.

The increase is temporary and is currently due to apply until 28 February 2027.

If this affects your business, please:

• update your payroll or expense claim system
• let affected employees know
• check that work-related kilometres are being recorded
• diarise 1 March 2027, when the temporary increase is due to finish

You can check the updated provisions in the relevant Award

The handshake deal is where a lot of small business HR problems start.

I see it all the time. A great new starter comes on board, everyone's keen, and the details get sorted "later". Then six months in there's a misunderstanding about hours, or pay, or what the job actually was, and nobody wrote anything down.

Putting it in writing isn't about mistrust. It's the opposite. A clear agreement means everyone knows where they stand, so you can get on with the work instead of second-guessing it.

If you've got people working for you on a verbal agreement, this week is a good time to get the basics down on paper. Your future self will thank you.

Award Pay Rates Increase from 1 July 2026 – Is Your Business Ready?

From 1 July 2026, new minimum pay rates come into effect following the Fair Work Commission's Annual Wage Review.

Every year the Fair Work Commission reviews minimum wages and modern award rates, and every year employers need to make sure they're paying the correct rates.
While the increase isn't a surprise, it is something you need to prepare for.

This year, most modern award minimum rates will increase by 4.75%.
